SUNYAC Honors Tennis and Cross Country Athletes of the Week

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its tennis and cross country athletes of the week for the week of September 19-25.

CROSS COUNTRY FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Sara Rosenzweig, Geneseo
(Sr., - Merrick, N.Y.)
Rosenzweig finished sixth out of 278 runners to lead Geneseo to first place out of 23 teams at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams, on Saturday. Rosenzweig covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 22:19.4 as the Knights bested a field that included defending national champion Williams, which entered the week as the top-ranked team in the nation. All told, 10 nationally-ranked squads were in the field, including six of the top-10 in the country. 

CROSS COUNTRY MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Isaac Garcia-Cassani, Geneseo
(Jr., - Holbrook, N.Y.)
Isaac Garcia-Cassani finished first in a stacked field of 284 runners to lead the Knights to first place out of 23 teams at the Purple Valley Classic, hosted by Williams at Mount Graylock Regional High School on Saturday. Garcia-Cassani pulled away down the stretch to finish with a winning time of 25:24.9 leading a pack of four Knights that finished in the top-10. Including Geneseo, the field included eight nationally ranked teams (four in the top-10), as well as 12 regionally-ranked squads from around the East. 

TENNIS SINGLES ATHETE OF THE WEEK - Sarah Mensah, The College at Brockport

Sarah Mensah had a dominating week, going undefeated in singles with six wins, while also posting a 3-1 record in doubles action. At the ITA Regional, Mensah reached the semifinals with four wins on Saturday and Sunday, and is the only unseeded player to reach the semifinals. Mensah opened the tournament with a 3-6 6-3 (10-6) win over the eighth seeded player from Rochester. In the third round Mensah defeated the 11th seed by a score of 6-3 6-2, then in the fourth she took down the fourth seed 7-6 6-2. The semifinals continue on Monday. Earlier in the week, Mensah helped Brockport win their first match of the season, defeating Oswego 6-3. Mensah swept her singles match, 6-0 6-0, then teamed up with Kelsey Shanahan for a 8-3 win in doubles.
 

TENNIS DOUBLES TEAM OF THE WEEK - Sarah Drexinger/Shari Forman, Plattsburgh State University

(Sr./Jr., - Burnt Hills, N.Y./Manhasset, N.Y.)
The duo of Sarah Drexinger and Shari Forman swept both doubles contests for the Cardinals over the weekend. The pair collected an 8-4 win over Bard College before claiming an 8-0 victory at Mount St. Mary College on Sunday.
