Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings following fall competition

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Geneseo and Oneonta are tied for the top spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings with an average of 8.32 points after fall championships.

The cup was named for Patrick R. Damore in 2012 when he retired as the SUNYAC Commissioner after serving in the position for 33 years.

Geneseo, the 2015 and 2016 winner of the cup, grabbed four SUNYAC crowns this fall in women's tennis, men's cross country, women's cross country and field hockey. The Knights also earned points as the runner up in the women's soccer conference championship.

Oneonta didn't capture any championships this fall, but earned points as top contenders in all seven fall post season tournaments. The Red Dragons finshed the SUNYAC championships second in men's cross country, women's cross country, men's soccer and field hockey. Oneonta also gathered points from its women's tennis team for making it to the SUNYAC championship semifinals and from its women's volleyball team for finishing the regular season second.

Cortland followed in third with 6.46 point after winning the men's soccer championship and finishing third in the women's cross country championship meet. The Red Dragons also earned points for their field hockey team finishing the regular season as the top seed. Cortland has won the cup 18 times in the last 20 years of its existence.

The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
