SUNYAC announces weekly basketball and ice hockey honors

The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has announced its basketball and ice hockey weekly honors for performances during the week of January 9-15.

Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Mikey Mcelroy, Oneonta
(Sr, F - Saratoga Springs, N.Y.)
In the only game this past week, McElroy scored a game high 31 points in leading Oneonta past New Paltz 100-87. In the process of scoring his 31 points, McElroy became the all-time leading scorer for the men's program surpassing the 1,455 points that was set by Zack Mager in 2015. McElroy currently has 1,458 points in his three plus years at Oneonta.

Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Heather Hebert, Oswego
(Sr, F - Hilton, N.Y.)
Hebert turned in yet another impressive week, collecting two double-doubles in three games. The Hilton, N.Y. native started off the week scoring 16 points on 7-of-9 (77.8%) shooting from the field in a 63-35 win over Cazenovia. Over the weekend, she notched 18 points on 61.5 percent shooting and collected 15 rebounds against Plattsburgh, before scoring 21 points and reeling in 14 boards at Potsdam.

Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week - Darren McCormick, Cortland
(Jr, F - Buffalo, N.Y.)
McCormick led the Red Dragons (8-7-1) to a pair of non-conference wins last week with eight points on five goals and three assists. In a 9-1 victory at Assumption College on Thursday, he tallied four points on two goals and two assists. On Saturday, McCormick registered a hat trick and added an assist in a come-from-behind, 5-2, win versus Curry, scoring a power-play goal and clinching the victory with two empty-net scores in the closing minutes. For the season, McCormick leads Cortland with 21 points on a team-high 14 goals and seven assists and has scored 17 points in nine non-conference games.

Goalie of the Week - Eric Bogart, Fredonia
(So, G - London, Ont.)
A sophomore from London, Ont., Bogart stopped 68 of 70 shots he faced in a pair of non-conference wins at home. The 4-0 shutout win over Johnson & Wales was his first collegiate shutout. He was making his 26th appearance for Fredonia over the past two seasons. Bogart lowered his season goals-against average to 3.01 while his season-long save percentage improved to .919. He has a 6-5-1 record this season. 

Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Bryce Ferrell, Potsdam
(Fr, F- )
Freshman Bryce Ferrell recorded his first career hat trick in the Bears 6-5 overtime victory over SUNY Canton on Saturday afternoon. Ferrell scored a shorthanded goal, a power-play goal and the game-winning goal 1:19 into the extra session.
