Basketball and ice hockey weekly awards announced

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has released its athletes of the week for basketball and ice hockey honoring five athletes from four different member institutions.

Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Mike Henry, Buffalo State
(Jr, G - Syracuse, NY)
Henry shot 68 percent from the field and averaged 24.0 points and 7.0 rebounds as Buffalo State reached 100 points in each of its two SUNYAC wins over the weekend. Henry had 25 points, nine rebounds and four assists in Friday's 101-94 win over Oneonta, and then had 23 points and five boards in Saturday's 104-67 win against New Paltz.

Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Lindsay Bettke, New Paltz
(So, G - Pelham, N.Y.)
Bettke helped lead the Hawks to three SUNYAC wins this week, defeating Oswego, Fredonia and Buffalo State. The sophomore guard averaged 17.3 points per game, shooting 40.9 percent from the field (18-of-44), 47.1 percent from long range (8-of-17) and 80 percent from the foul line (8-of-10). Bettke enjoyed 19 points versus the Lakers on Tuesday and followed that performance with 18 at Fredonia and 15 at Buffalo State. The sophomore also averaged 3.0, 2.7 rebounds per game, 2.0 assists per game and 1.0 blocks per game this week.

Men's Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week - Joey Davies, Oswego
(Sr, F - Demorestville, Ont.)
Oswego managed a 1-0-1 week, including a 5-0 comeback against the No. 5/6 Geneseo Knights on the back of Joey Davies. The senior forward recorded multiple four-point games with the first coming in a 10-1 win over Brockport on Friday. He tallied a couple of assists and then completed the night with a pair of goals, including one in the short-handed fashion. On Saturday, after falling behind 5-0 to the nationally-ranked Knights, Davies got Oswego on the board with a couple of goals late in the second. He followed this up assisting on the team's third goal just 24 seconds into the final period of regulation, making it a 5-3 game. Davies' last goal of the day, marking his first-career hat trick and ninth goal of the year came in the seventh minute of the third to cut the Knight's lead to one. No. 3 Oswego would eventually score the equalizing goal with just 3.3 seconds remaining to earn the tie.

Men's Ice Hockey Goalie of the Week - Matt Zawadzki, Oswego
(Sr, G - Fort Mill, S.C.)
Zawadzki earned a win and a tie, playing nearly 104 minutes in between the pipes and maintaining a .917 save percentage during the week. In a 10-1 win against Brockport on Friday, he stopped 15 shots, while nearly collecting a shutout, allowing a single goal with less than seven minutes remaining. Although not starting on Saturday against Geneseo, the Lakers ended up relying on Zawadzki in the second, third and overtime periods. The senior goalie allowed two goals in about 44 minutes of action with both scores coming in the second period to assist in earning the eventual 5-5 tie. When the Lakers needed him the most, in the third period and overtime, Zawadzki hunkered down and allowed his teammates to climb back into the 5-0 game. He amassed 18 saves in the contest, including several clutch glove saves.

Men's Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Jacob Haynes, Fredonia
(Fr, F - Whitby, Ont.)
Haynes had an eight-point weekend in Fredonia's home wins over Post. His five assists on Jan. 21 tied Fredonia's school record for most assists in a game. His six points in that game is one short of the school record. He has a three-game point streak and has tallied at least one point in eight of his 12 games this season.
