Final 2017 basketball and ice hockey athletes of the week released

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The last weekly awards of the 2017 season for basketball and ice hockey have been selected. The SUNYAC championship brackets are set and within the next two weeks five teams will be crowned 2017 champions in thier perspective sports.

Men's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Jonathan Patron, Plattsburgh
(So, F - Huntington, N.Y.)
Plattsburgh State sophomore forward Jonathan Patron averaged 24.7 points and 10 rebounds per game in a 2-1 week for the Cardinals. He shot 68.1 percent (32-of-47) from the floor for the week, including a 75.8 percent (25-of-33) clip against SUNYAC teams. After scoring 16 points in a 91-70 loss to No. 10 Middlebury College on Tuesday, Patron helped Plattsburgh State bounce back with a 34-point outing on 16-of-21 shooting in an 80-78 win over SUNY New Paltz on Friday, scoring what wound up being the game-winning basket with two seconds left in regulation. He also grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds against the Hawks. Finally, on Saturday, he drained 24 points in a 92-82 win over SUNY Oneonta. Patron currently sits just 182 points shy of 1,000 for his career after just his sophomore campaign.

Women's Basketball Athlete of the Week - Lindsay Bettke, New Paltz
(So, G - Pelham, N.Y.)
Bettke averaged 22.5 points per game this weekend to help the Hawks to a 2-0 record and the No. 2 seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament, earning the first-round bye. The sophomore enjoyed a career-high 23 points against Plattsburgh on Friday, going 8-of-20 from the field and 5-of-7 from long distance. Bettke also notched three boards and two steals versus the Cardinals. Against Potsdam on Saturday, Bettke registered 22 points, going 8-of-12 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also provided two boards and two steals in victory.

Ice Hockey Athlete of the Week - Dylan Shapiro, Brockport
(Jr, F)
Shapiro led the Brockport team in points in their 2-0 weekend, registering two goals and five assists en route to clinching the final SUNYAC playoff slot. In Saturday's 8-4 win over Plattsburgh, the junior registered two goals and two assists, and was +3 on the night. He played the helper role in Friday nights win over Plattsburgh, dishing out three assists in a game the team also scored eight goals. 

Ice Hockey Goalie of the Week - Matt Schneider, Brockport
(Fr, G)
Schneider stopped 53 shots over the weekend, going 2-0 and leading his team to the final playoff slot. The freshman played the entirety of both games, allowing just seven goals overall. In the teams 8-4 win over Plattsburgh on Saturday, he recorded 27 saves, helping snap the Cardinals 10 game non-losing streak, and clinching the playoff berth.

Ice Hockey Rookie of the Week - Doc Gentzler, Brockport
(Fr, F)
Gentzler was a spark for the Golden Eagles in their weekend sweep, netting three goals and assisting in two more. In Saturday night's win over Plattsburgh, Gentzler was the key factor, as his assist was for Brockport's first goal of the night and gave them momentum going into the second period. He then helped the team extend the lead with his two second period goals, earning them a SUNYAC playoff berth.
