SUNYAC picks first 2017 spring athletes of the week

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) selects its athletes of the week in baseball, softball and lacrosse to kick off the 2017 season. Eight athletes were honored from five different institutions.

Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week - Ryan Hubbard, Plattsburgh
(Jr, A - Aquebogue, N.Y.)
Plattsburgh State junior attackman Ryan Hubbard scored 10 goals and added one assist for 11 points in a 2-0 week for the Cardinals. Hubbard also scooped up four ground balls and caused three turnovers. He opened up the season with five goals in a 20-7 win over Castleton University on Wednesday before erupting for five goals and one assist in a 14-5 victory over Skidmore College on Sunday.

Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week - Donald Tesoriero, Plattsburgh

Plattsburgh State junior goalie Donald Tesoriero made 11 saves and fashioned a 5.00 goals-against average and a .688 save percentage in a 2-0 week for the Cardinals. He also finished the week with two assists. Tesoriero turned aside six shots in 30 minutes of action in the team's season-opening 20-7 win over Castleton University on Wednesday before making five saves in 30 minutes of play in Plattsburgh State's 14-5 triumph over Skidmore College on Sunday. He was credited with the win in both contests. 

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week – Kristen Ohberg, Cortland
(Sr, A - Brewster, NY)
Ohberg helped lead nationally second-ranked Cortland to a season-opening 17-5 victory versus Clarkson on Sunday with a game-high four goals. With her four scores, she became just the third Cortland player in program history to surpass 300 career points and currently has 302 on 177 goals and 125 assists. She trails only Lindsay Abbott (256-185-441) and Maria DiFato (244-86-330).

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week – Cassandra Minerd, Brockport
(Sr, D - Onondaga, N.Y.)
Cassandra Minerd was a key part of the Golden Eagles starting the 2017 season 2-0. The senior accounted for three caused turnovers against RIT, and picked up two ground balls and two draw controls. On the year, the senior has three ground balls, three caused turnovers and four draw control wins. 

Baseball Athlete of the Week - Eric Hamilton, Oswego
(Sr, INF/C - Liverpool, N.Y.)
Hamilton blasted out of the box for the 2017 season, crushing three homers over the Lakers' opening weekend, including one of the grand slam variety. Through the team's first eight games, the senior infielder has now collected 14 hits -- eight for extra-bases -- and driven in 12 runs, while stealing three bases and earning seven walks. Hamilton is batting .519 on the season and has a 1.037 slugging percentage.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week - Mitchell Cavanagh, Oswego
(Jr, P/INF - Oneida, N.Y.)
Cavanagh began his Laker career with a pair of stellar starts during the past two weeks. Against Wesley College, the junior dealt 5.0 shutout innings, surrendering just two hits, en route to the 7-2 Oswego win, while collecting 10 strikeouts in the start. In his second start - a 5-3 win over Christopher Newport University - Cavanagh went 7.0 innings, surrendering one run and striking out seven Marlin batters to earn his second win of the year (2-0). At the plate, the Oneida, N.Y. native collected a hit, an RBI, scored a run and earned a walk.

Softball Athlete of the Week - Katelyn Dennis, Fredonia
(Jr, 1B - Webster, N.Y.)
Dennis had six straight hits Saturday during back-to-back games at the Virginia Wesleyan University Beach Blast. She went 4 for 4 against Eastern with three doubles in a 7-2 Blue Devil win. The four hits tied her career single-game best. She singled twice and collected three RBI to pace Fredonia's offense in an 8-0 win over Shenandoah. The three RBI also tied a single-game best.

Softball Pitcher of the Week - Sam Seegar, Fredonia
(Fr, P - North Tonawanda, N.Y.)
Seegar made her first two collegiate pitching appearances during Fredonia's trip to the Virginia Wesleyan University Beach Blast. She picked up a win with 1 2/3 innings of work vs. Keuka. She entered with the bases-loaded and pitched out of the jam during a 2 1/3 stint against Eastern. Seegar allowed no earned runs, just two hits, and recorded four strikeouts in the two games.
