SUNYAC picks weekly honors for lacrosse, baseball and softball

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected its weekly award winners for men's and women's lacrosse, baseball and softball. The conference recognized eight athletes from five different members institutions.

Men's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week - Jake Giudice, Brockport
(Sr, A - Webster, N.Y.)
Brockport picked up a pair of wins and just missed in a close contest to post a 2-1 record on the week. Jake Giudice had a very strong week, tying the Brockport points record with 134. The senior started the week in a strong 18-7 win over Keuka, where he poured in five goals and picked up two ground balls. In a narrow loss to St. John Fisher, Giudice notched three points, with two goals and an assist while adding five ground balls and one caused turnovers. In Brockport?s 13-8 bounce back win, the Webster, N.Y. native added three goals and two assists for five points, while also chipping in a one caused turnover. For the week, Giudice tallied 13 points, 10 goals, three assists, seven ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

Men's Lacrosse Goalie of the Week - Conor Nowak, Brockport
(Sr, G - Amherst, N.Y.)
Brockport picked up a pair of wins and just missed in a close contest to post a 2-1 record on the week. Net minder Conor Nowak stood tall in the cage for the Green and Gold in all 180 minutes of action, picking up his first two wins of the season. In the week opening win over Keuka College, the Amherst, N.Y. native had 10 saves and three ground balls with a save percentage of 58.8 percent. In a close 10-9 loss to St. John Fisher, the senior had six saves and scooped up one ground ball. In the bounce back road win over Utica, Nowak wrapped up the week with 10 saves, one GB and a save percentage of 55.6 percent. On the week, Nowak faced 74 shots, and had a save percentage of 50.6 percent.

Women's Lacrosse Defensive Athlete of the Week - Jaclyn Beshlian, Cortland
(Sr, G - Wantagh, NY)
Beshlian helped Cortland defeat fifth-ranked Catholic University, 13-8, on Wednesday, making 13 saves against the Cardinals, including nine in the second half as the Red Dragons (3-1) broke open a close game over the final 30 minutes. She recorded a .619 save percentage in the game. For the season, Beshlian has a 3-1 record with a 7.90 GAA, 32 saves and a .508 save percentage.

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Athlete of the Week - Alanna Herne, Buffalo State
(Jr, A - Tonawanda, NY)
Herne tallied nine points in Buffalo State's 17-7 victory over Elmira on Saturday.  The junior netted four goals and added five assists in the Bengals' second victory of the season and leads the team with 23 points (8 goals and 15 assists) in three games.

Baseball Athlete of the Week - Paul Ludden, Brockport
(Sr, C/IF)
Ludden was nearly impossible to get out this past week, helping Brockport go 4-1 with his eight hits in eleven at bats. The senior also walked twice and was hit by four pitches, giving him an on base percentage of .824 for the week. In the weekend sweep of Plattsburgh, Ludden went six-for-nine at the plate, recording four RBI's and crossing the plate three times himself. He also demonstrated his base running abilities, stealing two bases during the week. The Cicero, N.Y. native was flawless in the field, registering nineteen putouts and five assists without an error in split action between catcher and third base.

Baseball Pitcher of the Week - Mitchell Cavanagh, Oswego
(Jr, P/INF - Oneida, N.Y.)
Cavanagh improved to 4-0 on the season with a dominating shutout performance in a 4-1 win over Fredonia. The junior threw 7.0 innings and allowed just four hits to average a .167 batting average against, while he lowered his season ERA to 1.38. 

Softball Athlete of the Week - Alexis Ross, Brockport
(Fr, OF - Hamburg, N.Y.)
Alexis Ross had a brilliant start to her collegiate career leading the Golden Eagles to a 7-5 record to start off the season. Ross provided a spark as Brockport's leadoff hitter posting a .645 batting average, with 20 hits, 16 runs scored, five RBIs, two stolen bases and three extra base hits for the Golden Eagles. The freshman as also played a stellar centerfield recording 14 putouts and two outfield assists last week.

Softball Pitcher of the Week - Katie Pitkin, Plattsburgh
(Jr, P - Dexter, N.Y.)
Plattsburgh junior pitcher Katie Pitkin fashioned a 1.98 ERA and went 4-1 in the circle in a 6-4 week for the Cardinals at the Rebel Spring Games and the NTC Spring Games in Florida. She also struck out 34 batters and had a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage on three putouts and four assists. Pitkin threw a pair of complete-game shutouts during the week, blanking Franklin & Marshall in a 5-0 victory on Monday before shutting out the University of Rochester in a 3-0 triumph on Friday. Pitkin proved difficult to figure out against Westfield State and Manhattanville College as well, striking out nine and eight batters in those two wins, respectively. She currently leads the SUNYAC in strikeouts (40) and wins (5).
