CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) is proud to announce that Plattsburgh's Camille Leonard (Oakville, Ontario/Thomas A. Blakelock) is the recipient of the 2017 Dr. Dolores Bogard Award. This distinguished annual award is given to a senior female student-athlete with the best combination of academic and athletic ability as voted upon by the membership body. Additionally, the student-athlete must carry a 3.30 cumulative grade point average.
A senior captain for the Plattsburgh women's hockey team, Leonard can now add even more prestige to her decorated career as a Cardinal, as she becomes the 33rd female student-athlete to be awarded the Dr. Dolores Bogard Award.
As a goalkeeper, Leonard helped lead Plattsburgh State to four national championships during her time with the Cardinals, including four ECAC West championships. Statistically, she finished her dominant career in net as the Division III all-time leader in save percentage (.949) and wins (75); second in career shutouts (30). Leonard also set the program record for goals-against average (0.99).
In 2016-17, Leonard received several recognitions and awards for her commitment to excellence on the ice including All-USCHO First Team, All-ECAC West Second Team, and named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
As a student-athlete, majoring in social work, Leonard earned SUNY Chancellor's Scholar-Athlete for Women's Ice Hockey honors, Plattsburgh Senior Achievement Award, CoSIDA Academic All-America At-Large First Team selection and CoSIDA Academic All-District At-Large First Team, and was honored on the SUNYAC Commissioner's List.
Additionally, Leonard is a member of Phi Kappa Phi (national multidisciplinary honor society), Phi Alpha (national social work honor society), Omicron Delta Kappa (national leadership honor society) and Chi Alpha Sigma (national athletics honor society), and has earned Dean's List honors every semester. Leonard completed her senior capstone internship at the Champlain Valley Family Center in the Substance Use Disorder Outpatient Treatment Clinic. She served as a temporary member on the steering committee for the Substance Abuse Prevention and Recovery of Clinton County (SPARCC), whose focus is to raise awareness and address issues associated with substance use in Clinton County through public events, which she helped organize activities to engage in advocacy and policy reform.
With asprirations to become a leading figure in social work, Leonard wishes to be a member of the United Nations Social Work community. Recently, Leonard was notified that she was accepted into the social work program at internationally-renowned McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.
The women's award is named after Dr. Dolores Bogard, who was an administrator and coach at Cortland for over twenty years. She served as SUNYAC President during the 1987-88 year.
