SUNYAC Game of the Week: Fredonia men's soccer overtime victory vs. Geneva

CORTLAND, N.Y.- The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected the men's soccer contest on Saturday, September 16, between Fredonia and Geneva as the game of the week. The Blue Devils continued their season's hot start by handing the Golden Torndoes their first loss of the season.

This contest got off to a slow start to say the least, not seeing a goal until late in the second half. Both goalies were making crucial saves to keep their teams in this highly intense and competitive matchup. Fredonia got on the scoreboard first when senior forward, Ryan Ross, intercepted a clearing attempt from a Geneva defender and blasted it past goalie, Luke Nolan, to give his team the lead in the 74th minute.

As the game was coming to an end, Geneva made one final run to protect their undefeated season and in the 88th minute, finally responded. The Golden Tornadoes evened the game up as senior defenseman, Ben Shoemaker, gobbled up a deflected shot by Fredonia goalie, Ty Bentham, and sent it right back past him causing the game to be decided in overtime.

Overtime was unpredictable, seeing how the two teams went most of the game without much offense but were active on the scoreboard going back and forth towards the end of regulation. The teams were set to keep their battle going in hopes of being the first to continue the offensive trend that occurred late in the game, which is exactly what happened in favor of the Blue Devils. Just seventy seconds into overtime, Fredonia sophomore midfielder, Dylan Moeser, emerged from a scramble in front of the Geneva goal and poked the ball into the net to secure the win in this hard fought contest.

Now 5-1, the Blue Devils have three overtime victories and are looking to continue their success as they begin conference play on the road against Brockport and Geneseo. Friday and Saturday.
