Feature Friday: 2017 women's tennis SUNYAC Championships

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The 2017 SUNYAC women's tennis championship is this weekend, October 14–16, at the Binghamton Tennis Center. The Binghamton Tennis Center will be the host of the event for the seventh year in a row. 

The past six times the championships were held at the Binghamton Tennis Center the tournament was won by Geneseo including last year when the Knights beat New Paltz, 5-1, in the finals. Overall, Geneseo has won the SUNYAC title 10 times, the most of any active SUNYAC member.

The 2017 SUNYAC women's tennis tournament will get underway at 11:30 a.m. Saturday as the two seed out of the West division, Fredonia battles the three seed from the East, Cortland. Fredonia comes into the tournament with a division record of 2-1 with their only loss coming against Geneseo. Cortland comes in with a record of 1-2 in division play with their only victory coming against Plattsburgh.

The second match-up is between the East second seed, Oneonta, and the West third seed, Brockport at 2 p.m. The Red Dragons enter the tournament with a record of 2-1 in the East with their only loss against New Paltz. Brockport comes in with a 1-2 record in the West, capturing their only win over Oswego.

The third quarterfinal match is the top seed in the West, Geneseo against the fourth seed out of the East Plattsburgh at 4 p.m. Geneseo comes into play with a perfect division record at 3-0. The Cardinals come into the tournament with a 0-3 record in East division play.

The final match of day one has the first seed in the East, New Paltz facing the fourth seed in the West, Oswego at 7 p.m. New Paltz has a record of 3-0 in the East division. While the Lakers come into the tournament with a 0-3 division record. 

The consolation matches will be played at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The semifinal rounds will follow at noon between the winner of the Fredonia vs. Cortland match taking on the winner of the New Paltz vs. Oswego match. They continue at 2:30 p.m. when the winner of Oneonta vs. Brockport faces the winner of Geneseo vs. Oswego. The winners of these matches will determine the championship match-up Monday morning at 10 a.m.
