SUNYAC Game of the Week: Oswego women's soccer upsets #8 Geneseo

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) has selected the women's soccer game on October 14, which saw Oswego upset nationally eighth-ranked Geneseo as its game of the week.

Defense was a major factor throughout the game; in the first half of play the teams went scoreless. Early in the second half, at the 53:31 minute mark, Oswego junior midfielder, Audrey Burbidge (Cazenovia, NY), sent the ball towards the box and senior midfielder Sarah Grupp (Charlottesville, VA) was able to finish and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.

The lone goal was enough as sophomore goalkeeper, Emma Allen (Syracuse, NY), was a brick wall in net saving all ten shots the Knights booted at her en route to the shutout and the women's soccer SUNYAC Defensive Athlete of the Week Award.

Oswego's upset victory gave the Knights their first loss of the season and kept the Lakers' season and SUNYAC playoff hopes alive. Geneseo, Plattsburgh and Potsdam have all clinched a playoff berth, there are three spots left to fill on the bracket and Oswego currently sits fifth in the conference.

Both teams continue SUNYAC competition this weekend as Oswego faces Cortland Saturday at 1 p.m. and Geneseo hits the road to play Potsdam, Friday at 3 p.m. and Plattsburgh, Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
