Throwback Thursday: A glimpse into Geneseo's swimming and diving history

CORTLAND, N.Y. - With the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) men's and women's swimming and diving championships only one week away, we decided to feature the Geneseo men's and women's swimming and diving teams as today's Throwback Thursday.

The Knights enter this year's championship as the winningest school within the conference with 24 titles for the men and 25 titles for the women. The first title in the Knights swimming and diving history was won during the 1975-76 season. At the time the Knights only had a men's team and were under the direction of Coach Duncan Hinckley.

Throughout history the Knights have gone on to win multiple titles, most recently winning last year's SUNYAC title. That win brought in the fourth title in a row for the men's team, and the tenth title in a row for the women's team, both under head coach Paul Dotterweich.

Last year, the men's team won the title with 989 points which was 450 points higher than what second place New Paltz earned. Some stand out athletes include Kevin Schaub who broke his own conference record to win the 200 IM, while also taking three other first place wins for the team. The 400 free relay team comprised of Matthew Modelewski, Derek Secord, Scott Guyton, and Jeff Doser, also set a conference record, taking the SUNYAC title in that event.

The women's team totaled 929 points, which was 300 points higher than second place New Paltz. Some of the key athletes for the women's team include Nancy Nasky who brought in three first place finishes for the Knights in the 200 free, 500 free, and 1,650 free. Samantha Reichman was the top finisher for the Knights in the 1M dive taking third place. Lastly, the 400 freestyle relay team captured the final win of the championship in their event.

The Knights look to defend their title yet again next week at the SUNYAC swimming and diving championship. The event starts Wednesday, February 21 and runs through Saturday, February 24. All events, both swimming and diving will take place at the Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center at Erie Community College (ECC) in Buffalo, N.Y.
