Geneseo holds the lead in Commissioner's Cup standings following winter championships

CORTLAND, N.Y. – After the completion of the 2018 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) winter championships, Geneseo holds the lead in the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings with an average of 9.39 points.

The cup was named for Dr. Patrick R. Damore in 2012 when he retired as the SUNYAC Commissioner after serving in the position for 33 years.

The Knights brought home all but one SUNYAC winter title winning the crown in women's basketball, men's ice hockey, men's and women's swimming and diving, and men's and women's indoor track and field. Geneseo has brought home the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup the past three years, which previously belonged to Cortland 17 out of the 18 years prior. Cortland and Brockport follow behind Geneseo, rounding out the top three in the standings with an average of 6.93 and 6.87 points respectively.

Cortland gained their points with the men's swimming and diving team placing second in the 2018 SUNYAC championship as well as the men's indoor track and field team placing second in their championship. In addition, the men's basketball team finished the regular season third in the conference.

Brockport's men's basketball team earned points for the Golden Eagles finishing the regular-season at No. 2 while the women's indoor track and field finished second at the 2018 championship and the men were third.

The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter, and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on.  A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport.  The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has.  This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
