SUNYAC baseball first round recap

CORTLAND, N.Y. - The opening round of the State University of New York (SUNYAC) baseball playoffs were completed today in Cortland where host Cortland took on Brockport and New Paltz took on Oswego.

The first contest of the day featured host Cortland earning a comfortable victory 5-0 against Brockport. The first four innings did not see a single run get scored for either team as both teams could not bring any baserunners until the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles were able to strand three Cortland baserunners earlier in the game, but not in the fifth inning when Colin BeVard drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring in the first Cortland run. Later in the inning Patrick Schetter hit a sacrafice fly to bring in another Red Dragon run. An RBI single from Joe Tardiff in the sixth inning extended Cortland's lead to three runs. The final two Cortland RBIs in the eighth inning were from Colin BeVard and Justin Teague. Christian Dufresne tossed a complete game for Cortland, allowing four hits and striking out five.

The second game came to a thrilling ending as New Paltz lost in a heartbraking game. The game started similarly to the first game today as both teams left runners stranded through the first three innings. New Paltz broke the deadlock in the fourth inning Brian Brenton drove in the first run of the game. Another run was driven in because of a fielding error before the side was retired and Oswego was able to anser back with two runs of their own from Miles Kutscher and Eli Holton. Oswego was able to grab the lead in the fifth with an RBI from Brandon Nicholson with a solo home run. John McCarrick equalized for New Paltz in the sixth inning with an RBI single. The game ended in thrilling fashion with a bottom of the ninth walk off home run from Oswego's Ryan Enos.
