Magnussen hired to lead Oswego track & field programs

Oswego Sports Information Department

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is happy to announce the hiring of Evan Magnussen as its track and field head coach after serving as interim head coach in 2017-18. Magnussen was originally hired as the head cross country coach in the spring of 2017 and will continue guiding those programs along with track and field.

Oswego had successful seasons in both cross country and track during Magnussen's first year. Colin Greenseich qualified for the 2017 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championship under Magnussen's watch – the first male cross country runner to reach nationals from Oswego in 15 years. For the outdoor track and field campaign, long jumper Tylea McCarthy-Walker also earned a spot at the national tournament. McCarthy-Walker set a new program record in the long jump on April 16 behind the coaching staff's tutelage.

He helped the women's track squad to its highest SUNYAC Championship finish in program history, nabbing fifth at the indoor championships. In all – between the cross country and track teams – Magnussen oversaw more than 10 All-SUNYAC Team recipients and multiple All-Region honorees.

A four-year cross country and track and field student-athlete at St. John Fisher College, Magnussen has spent a year on the Cortland track and cross staffs as an assistant prior to his arrival at Oswego. The Geneseo, N.Y. native also was a running instructor and coach for Finger Lakers Running Co. for two years.

In his time with the Red Dragons, he helped seven athletes qualify for NCAA Championships, four to All-America status and one to a national title (heptathlon).

Magnussen is certified by USATF as Level 1 and he also holds his NYSPHSAA coaching certification.

While at Fisher, Magnussen was named a captain of both the cross country and track and field teams. During his senior campaign, Magnussen was named to the Empire 8 All-Conference Team for cross country.

Magnussen graduated from Fisher with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology with a focus in exercise physiology. In 2018, he completed his Master of Science degree in exercise science from Cortland.
