Geneseo leads in Commissioner's Cup standings following 2018 fall championships

CORTLAND, N.Y. - With the 2018 fall State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championships complete, Geneseo finds itself at top of the Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup standings with an average of 8.25 points.

The cup was named after Dr. Patrick R. Damore in 2012 following his retirement as the SUNYAC Commissioner. Dr. Damore served in the position for 33 years.

This season, the Knights managed to compile their points by taking home titles in both men's and women's cross country, as well as women's soccer. Geneseo's volleyball team also earned points for the Knights after taking the top-seed in the regular-season and finishing second in the 2018 SUNYAC championship.

The Dr. Patrick R. Damore Commissioner's Cup has belonged to Geneseo for the past four years. Cortland held it for 17 out of 18 years prior. New Paltz and Cortland round out the top three in the standings with an average of 7.64 and 7.00 points, respectively.

New Paltz accumulated their points by coming out victorious in the 2018 SUNYAC women's tennis championship. Following that, the Hawks walked away with conference titles in field hockey and women's volleyball. New Paltz also added to its points by finishing second in the regular-season in men's soccer.

Cortland had three teams make it to the conference championship games this season for men's soccer, women's soccer, and field hockey, but all fell just shy of coming away victorious in those matches.

The Commissioner's Cup point system is determined by the 20 different conference sports in the fall, winter and spring. A 10-point system is used in each sport. The first-place team gets 10 points, the second-place team gets 9 points and so on. A team's regular-season finish will be added to their post-season finish and divided by two for their final total for that sport. The total number of points that a school accumulates is divided by the number of conference sports it has. This school total determines the overall winner at the end of the school year.
