Softball pounds out 23 hits in doubleheader sweep of Mount St. Mary

Senior Cori McFall goes deep in game 1

The SUNY Oneonta softball team pounded out 23 hits today in sweeping a doubleheader on the road against Mount St. Mary College.  The two wins extended Oneonta's win streak to five games raising its overall record to 14-10.  The losses for the Knights dropped them below the .500 mark at 12-13.

Game 1 – Oneonta 6, MSMC 2
Senior Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) led the offense in the opener going 3-for-4 including a big three-run homer in the top of the seventh to give the Red Dragons a 5-1 lead.  Juniors Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford), Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) and Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) along with sophomore Brooke Corbett (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Central) collected two hits each.

Sophomore Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) went six innings to pick up her third straight win on the hill for Oneonta.  Bluethgen allowed three hits and one unearned run striking out two.  Classmate Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) finished the game allowing a hit and an unearned run.

Oneonta scored a single run in the third inning when McFall hit a single up the middle to drive in Del Genio.  The Red Dragons' lead held until the bottom of the sixth where the Knights posted a run to tie the game entering the final inning.

Freshman Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) hit a one-out double to get things started in the seventh.  Del Genio singled to score Collins with the first run of the inning.  Ruiz then reached on an infield single before McFall cleared the bases with her shot over the left field fence.  The final run of the inning scored with two outs when Sabatino hit a double driving in freshman Amanda Sexton (Port Jervis/Port Jervis).

Game 2 – Oneonta 9, MSMC 4
In the second game today, the Red Dragons trailed 3-2 entering the sixth inning before exploding for seven runs to take command.  The big hits in the inning came from freshman Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South) who hits a two-run single and McFall who had a two-run double.

The sixth for Oneonta started with McFall reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman.  Meaghan Raliegh came in to run for McFall and she was sacrificed to second by pinch-hitter Alyssa Garrison (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa).  Sexton then reached on another error before stealing second to put two runners in scoring position.  Koch then singled them both in to give Oneonta a 4-3 lead.

The Red Dragons then loaded the bases before scoring single runs on fielder's choices to push its lead to 6-3.  McFall then reentered the game to smack a double to center field driving in Del Genio and Gwen Donaldson (Babylon/Babylon).  The final run of the inning came in on an infield single by Sabatino scoring Ruiz from third.

Calabro picked up her fifth win in relief tossing three innings and striking out five batters.  Corbett led the offense with three hits including a triple.

Oneonta will face New Paltz tomorrow afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader beginning at noon.
