Swarthmore, PA. The SUNY Oneonta field hockey team earned its tenth win of the season today in an overtime thriller against Swarthmore College, 2-1. The Red Dragons improved to 10-2, and the Garnet's dropped to 6-6. In the match freshman
Cali Cortese (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) netted her fourth goal, and her first game winning goal of her college career.
The Red Dragons broke out and scored early in the match, finding the back of the cage in the eighth minute. Junior
Allyson Wells (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) scored her ninth goal of the season and pushed her point streak to eight consecutive games with a point scored. The Red Dragons carried this one goal advantage into the half. At the break the Red Dragons were outshooting the Garnets 8-4, and had more penalty corners, 5-4.
In the second half, Swarthmore's goaltender Zelda Bank had a game high seven saves to keep the Garnets in the match. In the 64
th minute Swarthmore found the equalizing goal off the stick of Sophie Peipher, 1-1.
The game required only one overtime period as Cortese pocketed the game winner in the right side of the cage at the 9:19 mark, 2-1.
In the match junior
Carissa Warren (Harpursville/Harpursville) had her first defensive save of the season. Sophomore
Danell Jones (Whitney Point/Whitney Point) earned her ninth win of the year and moved to 9-2 on the season.
The Red Dragons are back in action at home in a conference match against Morrisville College at 5pm on October 11
th.
