Saints take two from Bears

CANTON, N.Y.—St. Lawrence University (8-6) took two against the SUNY Potsdam team (3-9) on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints took game one 4-5 and game two 9-1 in five innings. Junior centerfielder Brooke Falsion (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) went 3-for-4 with a run scored in game one. In game two, freshman third baseman Sydney Miller (Hoosick Falls, N.Y./Hoosick Falls) went 2-for-2 with an RBI.
 
After hitting a single and working her way to third, Falsion got the Bears in front crossing home after a passed ball. With runners on first and third, senior catcher Lauren Brace (Moriah, N.Y./Moriah Centeral) laid down a sacrifice bunt to allow sophomore leftfielder Lucy Condon (Kitchener, Ontario/St. David Catholic) to score.
 
In the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded, St. Lawrence was able to get a run back when Mylea Mann hit a single through the left side that plated Meryl Adams.
 
The following inning, the Saints took the lead scoring four runs. Skylar Hein entered the batter's box with one out when she hit a two RBI single up the middle. Following a double by Caitlin Syphurs, Angelina Carney singled to right field that brought in Hein. Mann managed to reach on a fielding error which gave Syphurs the opportunity to cross the plate for the final run in the inning.
 
Condon kicked off the final inning on the right track for Potsdam with a single to center. One out later sophomore first baseman Megan Fish (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) also hit a single to center, advancing Condon to second. Brace followed the trend with a single to center herself that scored Condon and moved Fish to third. Fish crossed the plate after a sacrifice fly from Miller. The Bears could not get the tying run and lost game one, 5-4.
 
Senior Samantha Hubinsky (Gansevoort, N.Y./South Glens Falls) started the game in the circle for Potsdam, pitched 4.0 innings, striking out two, and allowing one run on four hits. Freshman Kayla Palmer (Chester, N.Y./Chester) (1-1) was given the loss after pitching 2.0 innings giving up three earned runs on five hits. Madison Mitchell pitched a complete game for St. Lawrence, striking out 11, allowing two runs on six hits.
 
Condon went 1-for-4 with two runs scored, and Fish went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Brace also went 1-for-3 and tacked on two RBI.
 
 
The Saints were the first to get on the scoreboard after scoring six in the bottom of the third. Taylor Armijo started the inning with a one out triple for the Saints. After another out, Syphurs singled to center to bring in Armijo. Following another single, Carney hit a single herself to bring in Syphurs. Mitchell proceeded to get the bases loaded with a single to left field. Mann ended the team's hitting streak and brought in all the runners with a grand slam to center field.  
 
In the top of the fourth, Potsdam got on the board with Miller's single to right field that brought in Fish.
 
St. Lawrence ended the game early after scoring three more runs in the fifth, putting the mercy rule into effect. Mann brought in another run with a single to left field, followed by Allie Courtwright and Alexandra Barter who both went back-to-back with an RBI single to the right field line.
 
Senior Meghan Dougherty (East Greenbush, N.Y./Columbia) (0-3) received the loss after pitching 2.2 innings, striking out two, and allowing six runs on eight hits. Junior Alissa McCauley (Malone, N.Y./Franklin Academy) pitched 2.0 innings, struck out four, and allowed three runs on four hits. Courtwright pitched all five innings for the Saints, striking out one, while allowing one run on six hits.
 
Fish, Brace, and freshman shortstop Grace Folmsbee (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) each went 1-for-2, while Fish added a run scored.
 
The Bears return to action on Saturday as they kick off conference play against SUNY Cortland in a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
