Baseball takes two on the road in West Virginia against DeSales University

Glenville, WV.  The SUNY Oneonta baseball team opened its 2018 season in Glenville, WV against DeSales University and came away with a 2-1 record in the three-game series.  The Red Dragons were led by strong pitching allowing only four earned runs over 24.2 innings while holding opposing hitters to a .119 batting average. Senior Thomas Bond (Somers/North Salem) and junior Robert Ottaviano (Nanuet/Albertus Magnus) both earned their first wins of the season, while senior James McCarty (Stony Brook/Chaminade) earned his first save of the season.
 
The Red Dragons took the opening game of the weekend on Saturday by a score of 5-1.  Freshman John Zinko (Wallkill/Wallkill) went 2-2 with a walk and a run batted in. Sophomore Brandon LaVenture (Schenectady/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) went 1-2 with a run scored and a run batted in.  Bond pitched six innings and struck out four while allowing only a pair of hits.  Three relievers closed out the game with three scoreless innings.
 
In the first game of a doubleheader today, Oneonta fell 2-1 on a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the seventh.  Junior Takoda Sitar (Katonah/Somers) pitched five solid innings in his first start of the season striking out five and allowing only one hit.  Dalton Beatty (Atwater, CA/Atwater) and Donald Geloso (Staten Island/Monsignor Farrell) each had a pair of hits.
 
In the second game yesterday, sophomore Dominic Lamonica (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the seventh with his first home run of the season.  The Red Dragons would add another run in the inning and McCarty then retired DeSales in order striking out two to preserve a 3-1 win for Oneonta.  Junior Mickey Mullins (Vestal/Vestal) went 2-4 in the game with a run scored.
 
On the weekend, Geloso led the team in batting going 3 for 9 (.333) including two doubles, a walk and a run batted in. Zinko finished the weekend batting .500 in two appearances going 2-4. Beatty and Mullins each had a stolen base for the Red Dragons.
 
The Red Dragons are back in action against Bridgewater (VA) College on March 3rd.
