Women's Tennis shuts out Plattsburgh to start season 2-0

Box Score Plattsburgh, NY – The road warrior SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons women's tennis team have gotten off to a flying start this season winning their second away match in a row and second by shutout to start this young season.  The Red Dragons have yet to lose an individual match. The re-energized roster places three freshmen in the lineup and all have come through succeeding with their first collegiate athletic tests.

After a rained out match on Friday versus Plattsburgh, the two teams reconvened only to have to sit through another five hour rain delay.  The teams finally took the court at approx. 2pm and went on a tear.  The doubles competition saw freshman Julieta Eulau (Oceanside/Oceanside) and junior Alyssa Brault (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) start off slow in the number one position but quickly recovered running off seven games in a row to secure a victory 8-2.  The number two tandem of senior Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) and freshmen Mya Lipscomb (Peekskill/Walter Panas) had some early match jitters and settled down to take an 8-5 win.  The Red Dragon early match jitters was contagious today when Freshman Emma Messenger (Marlboro/Marlboro) and sophomore Danielle Swierczyna (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) went down 2-0 and then ran off eight of the next nine games and won decisively 8-3.  Freshmen Dorothy Zeisler (Davenport/Charlotte Valley) and Gianna Pappini won their exhibition match 6-2 gaining valuable collegiate experience.  The freshmen have all responded to the team first mindset implemented at training camp by coach Samantha Butcher and head coach Lonnie Mitchel.

A commanding 3-0 lead going into singles play was too much for the Cardinals to overcome.  Lipscomb won easily at fourth singles 6-0, 6-0 and senior captain Samantha Felice (Seneca Falls/Mynderse Academy) nailed down the match clincher in the fifth spot with a lopsided win 6-1, 6-1.  All other singles play was not completed due to rain shortened schedules, but did see Eulau at number two, Halpern at number three leading in their competition when the dual match was halted with a Red Dragon team win secured.

The SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons play a lot of road matches this fall and will go out of town again with a rare weeknight matchup versusSkyline Conference favorite Yeshiva University on Tuesday, September 12th beginning at 8 PM at a neutral venue at Queens College, Queens, NY.
