Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Late pressure for naught, Devils trimmed 1-0

FREDONIA, N.Y. --- A goal by Allegheny's Shannon McGuinn -- and some bad luck by Fredonia -- resulted in a 1-0 women's soccer loss by the Blue Devils on Tuesday night at University Stadium.

McGuinn converted a Blue Devil turnover deep in their defensive end for his fifth goal of the season late in the 29th minute. Gator freshman goalkeeper Alexis Brandon made the one-goal lead stand by making four saves. It was her first collegiate win and shutout.

Fredonia's setback came down to a matter of inches. Blue Devil shooters struck iron three times while pressing to scoring the equalizer in the second half.

The first excellent scoring chance in the 69th minute when Audrey Yokopovich (Webster, N.Y.) outran a defender for a ball up the right sideline and crossed into the box to Aleeya Clemons (Olean, N.Y.), whose shot banged off the cross bar. The Gators played the rebound out of danger.

The Blue Devils hit iron for a second time in the half when Yokopovich banged a short shot off the middle of the cross bar in the 82nd minute. The third near-goal came in the 89th minute when Olivia Coccitto (Spencerport, N.Y.) hit the right post after a cross by Lauren Cullinan (Clarence, N.Y.), who moved from defense to offense late in the game and made an immediate impact.

Allegheny had an insurance goal waved off in the 86th minute by an offisides call.

Blue Devil freshman goalkeeper Marissa Quimby (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) entered the game first in the SUNYAC with 51 saves and first with 6.36 saves per game. She added to her season total with seven saves vs. Allegheny.

The Blue Devils, now 4-6, return to SUNYAC competition for one game this weekend, a Battle of the Lake meeting with Buffalo State 1 p.m. Saturday at University Stadium. Fredonia is 1-1 in the SUNYAC and holds a 2-0 lead over Buffalo State in the Lake Erie Cup standings.
