Lakers Win First Set but Fall to Defending Champs

FREDONIA, N.Y. - The Oswego State volleyball team took the first set against Brockport but suffered a 3-1 loss on Friday evening in its first SUNYAC Pool Play match of the year, host at Fredonia.  Set scores were 28-26, 11-25, 14-25, 15-25.  With the setback, the Lakers fall to 5-8 overall and 0-1 in the conference.  The Golden Eagles improve to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Oswego and Brockport went back-and-forth during the first set with the biggest lead for either team being three points.  Oswego was down 22-19 when freshman Melissa Lussier smacked a kill down.  Junior Alison Berger followed that with a pair of aces to tie it at 22 apiece.  The teams would trade service errors and kills to make it 24-24.  Oswego would grab its first set point on a Brockport hitting error, but Brockport would tie it at 25-25 with a kill.  Junior Alison Sullivan would find an opening to put Oswego back in front at 26-25 and Brockport would answer once more with a kill from the outside.  Following a ball handling error on Brockport, sophomore Lauren Fie's solo block finished the opener in the Lakers' favor.

Oswego came out strong in the second with a pair of aces from Berger.  The Lakers would push the lead to three at 5-2, but Brockport would answer with a 12-2 run to push the lead to 17-7.  Brockport's defense held the Lakers in check, keeping the team to only three kills in the set.

The third set had the teams tied 9-9 before a 12-4 run opened up the set for the Golden Eagles.  It was more of the same as Brockport outhit the Lakers 12-3 in kills in the set.

The fourth saw the Lakers rush out to a 9-5 lead with six kills in the span.  Sullivan had a pair as well as sophomore Shauna O'Flaherty.  Brockport would tie it up on a kill and three Oswego errors.  From there, the Golden Eagles went on a 10-1 spurt to open up the set and put the match away.

Lussier led the Lakers in kills with eight.  She chipped in 10 digs to help on the defensive side.  Sullivan had seven kills and four blocks while O'Flaherty had six kills and 13 digs.  Sophomore Julia Flohr led the squad with 20 assists.

The Lakers return to the court tomorrow for matchups with Buffalo State at 2:30 p.m. and Cortland at 5 p.m.
