Red Dragons Clinch Third Seed in SUNYAC with 1-0 Win vs. Oswego

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Sam Barringer (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) scored her first goal of the season late in the second half as the Cortland women's soccer team defeated Oswego, 1-0, in the SUNYAC regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Stadium Red. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 9-3-3 overall and 6-3 in the conference and clinched the third seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament. Cortland will host sixth-seeded Brockport on Saturday, Sept. 28, in the tournament first round. The Lakers fell to 7-6-1 and 4-5.

Freshman Janessa Factor (Farmingville/Sachem East) assisted on the game winner for the Red Dragons. Junior goalie Abby Miller (Andover) registered seven saves in posting the shutout, raising her season record to 5-2-3. Sophomore goalie Emma Allen (Syracuse/Corcoran) turned aside seven shots for the Lakers.

The game featured multiple scoring chances for each team. Oswego generated the first opportunity in the 15th minute, but Cortland freshman Cassidy Byrns (Massapequa) cleared Oswego senior Sarah Grupp's (Charlottesville, VA/Western Albemarle) header off the goal line near the left post after a corner kick. Cortland had the next two chances in the first half. In the 23rd minute, Allen made a save on junior Vanessa Romero's (Valhalla) 25-yard dipping shot near the upper left corner. Allen then punched a bid by junior Brenna Conover (Smithtown/Hauppauge) over the crossbar in the 35th minute.

The second half saw much of the same as each team created scoring chances. In the 63rd minute, Romero hit the crossbar with a header off a corner kick. The Lakers then had two good looks to break the scoreless tie, but sophomore Gianna Perri (New City Arlington) just sailed a 22-yard shot over the crossbar in the 65th minute and junior Chloe Lonergan (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) drove a clean header off a corner serve wide right in the 68th minute.

The goalies continued to keep the scoreboard at zeroes at time ticked off with Allen punching Romero's 24-yard free kick over the bar in the 78th minute and Miller making a leaping save on freshman Lynsey Roth (Liverpool) who broke free on the right side with a shot from eight yards away in the 84th minute. Cortland eventually netted the game-winning score after the third of three straight corner kicks in the 87th minute. Freshman Erin Valente (Latham/Shaker) sent the ball into the box where Factor was able to get a shot off in traffic. The ball caromed right to Barringer who deposited a high shot from close range. Oswego had one last chance but Miller made a routine save on Roth's shot with 1:07 remaining to seal the win.
