Men's Lacrosse Drops 13-6 Decision to No. 19 St. Lawrence

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – In a rivalry series that oftentimes features extreme weather, Wednesday's non-conference game between the Plattsburgh State men's lacrosse team and No. 19 St. Lawrence University was no different, as the visiting Saints prevailed, 13-6, in windy—and at times near whiteout—conditions at the Field House Complex.
 
St. Lawrence used a stretch of five unanswered goals spanning from late in the first quarter to late in the second quarter to pull away with the win. The Saints finished with a 35-26 edge in shots and won 13-of-22 face-offs. Both teams were pressured in transition, with St. Lawrence going 10-for-14 on clear attempts and Plattsburgh State going 9-for-16 in transition.
 
Plattsburgh State drops to 1-8 overall with the loss and hosts Oswego State next on Saturday, April 7, at 1 p.m. St. Lawrence rises to 7-2 overall with the win and next hosts Skidmore College on Saturday, April 7, at 12 p.m.
 
Sophomore midfielder Kevin Litchauer (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) kicked off scoring for the Cardinals midway through the first quarter, while junior attackman Conor Caffrey scored on a feed from sophomore attackman Mike Donnelly with 3:03 left in the first to tie the game. Senior attackman Ryan Hubbard (Aquebogue, N.Y./Riverhead) put Plattsburgh State out in front with 1:54 remaining in the period before Caffrey fed sophomore attackman Harrison Koch for a goal less than a minute later to make the score 2-2. Senior attackman Jordan Dow handed St. Lawrence the lead with two seconds left in the stanza, cashing in on a Donnelly feed.
 
Caffrey scored back-to-back goals midway through the second quarter before Donnelly tallied with 56 seconds remaining in the half to extend the Saint advantage to 6-2. Freshman attackman Stephen Kane (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) answered back by tallying on a pass from sophomore defenseman Kyle Smith (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) 10 seconds later, marking the first assist of Smith's career. St. Lawrence entered the intermission up, 6-3.
 
The Saints came out of the break with a man-up goal scored by Caffrey on a Dow feed 3:15 into the fresh half, while Caffrey connected with Donnelly less than a minute later. Senior midfielder Brad Johnston (Altamont, N.Y./Guilderland) scored unassisted for the Cardinals with 8:40 left in the third, while sophomore midfielder Jack Suominen and Koch each scored late in the period to stake the Saints to a 10-4 cushion heading into the final regulation period.
 
St. Lawrence's junior midfielder David Jennings found twine on a pass from Caffrey 2:59 into the fourth before senior attackman Steven Peterson netted a man-up goal on a feed from Donnelly with 6:54 left in regulation. Junior attackman Nick Brindisi found freshman attackman Jack Hennessey for a goal with 4:40 to go in regulation to push the St. Lawrence advantage to 13-4.
 
Senior midfielder Billy Moller (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) and Hubbard each scored for the Cardinals down the stretch, with Hubbard's man-up tally coming with 1:02 left on the clock.
 
Hubbard led the Cardinals with two goals, while senior face-off specialist Travis Mauro (Northport, N.Y./Northport) scooped up five ground balls. Hubbard and senior defenseman Tyler Copius (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each caused two turnovers.
 
For St. Lawrence, Caffrey and Donnelly led the way with seven and five points, respectively, with Caffrey scoring four goals and adding three assists and Donnelly offering two goals and three assists. Junior midfielder Zachary Ettinghausen went 10-for-14 at the X and corralled nine ground balls, while senior long-stick midfielder Sam Sweeney caused two turnovers.
 
Senior goalies Donald Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and Austin Graham (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) split time in net for the Cardinals, with Tesoriero making seven stops in 45 minutes of action and Graham turning aside two shots in a full 15 minutes of play in the fourth quarter. Sophomore goalie Alex Terry made nine saves to backstop St. Lawrence to the win.
