Plattsburgh, NY – The SUNY Canton men's hockey team earned a 4-3 win against No. 8 nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State on Saturday evening at Ronald B. Stafford Arena in Plattsburgh.

The win is the first against any NCAA nationally-ranked top 10 opponent in school history. The Cardinals are ranked eighth nationally in the United States College Hockey Online poll and 12th in the D3hockey.com poll.

The Roos (1-0) jumped out to a quick lead silencing the Plattsburgh crowd as Tyler Bullard and Josh Sova executed a nice give-and-go. Stuart Fierheller started the break out at the far boards hitting Bullard in the neutral zone. Bullard found Sova to his left who played a pass back to Bullard on a 2-on-1. Bullard lifted a shot top shelf under the center of the crossbar for the lead just 38 seconds in.

Canton doubled its lead a minute later as Zach Pease picked off a pass in the high slot off a Plattsburgh miscue in their defensive zone. Pease found Joey Vocino in the low slot as he deked Plattsburgh goaltender Jimmy Poreda and flipped a shot over his blocker.
The Cardinals (0-1) got one back at the 13:14 mark of the opening period on the power play when Pat Egan skated across the blue line dropping off a pass for Antoine Fournier-Gosselin. He hit Cole Stallard with a beautiful cross-ice pass as he one-timed a shot near post past a diving Michael Cerasuolo. Plattsburgh held a slim 15-12 shots advantage but the Roos took a 2-1 lead into first intermission.  

The Roos regained a two-goal advantage when Josh Sova made a nifty move along the far boards to evade a Plattsburgh defender and slipped the puck between the five-hole of Poreda to score short-handed. Trenton Yule and Luke Hincenbergs earned helpers on the play at 5:22 of the second.

Plattsburgh responded just 34 seconds later, still on the power play, as Fournier-Gosselin ripped a shot top shelf past the glove side as Cerasuolo was shielded by a Cardinal player out in front. Cam Owens earned an assist on the play with 25 seconds left with the skater advantage. Despite the hosts holding a 33-20 edge in shots the Roos took a 3-2 lead following 40 minutes of play.

Canton added a crucial insurance score at 11:59 of the third period. Bullard moved the puck from right to left at the point to Vili-Jesper Koivula. Koivula played a quick pass to Sova waiting on the doorstep as he put a one-timer past Poreda.

The Cardinals pulled the goalie with 2:03 remaining and added a goal from Antoine Desnoyers with 15 seconds remaining but the Roos earned the 4-3 victory.
Cerasuolo had a monster game stopping 44 of the 47 shots he faced, while Poreda made 23 saves for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals went 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Roos were 1-for-6.
 
The men's hockey team returns to the ice next weekend for a home-and-home series with SUNY Potsdam. The Roos host the Bears on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Roos House on Alumni Night. The first 140 students in attendance will receive free Northmen Whiteout T-shirts.
