Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late rally falls short

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Washington and Jefferson led wire-to-wire and defeated the Fredonia men's basketball team 73-64 at Medaille College on Saturday. The Devils made it a two-possession game in the final minute, but clutch free-throw shooting by W & J held off the rally. Isaiah Ice (Bronx, N.Y. / Iona Prep) led the Devils with 21 points. Tyler Roberts (Rochester, N.Y. / Wheatland Chili) added 11, and Matt Perez (Miami, Fla. / Florida Christian) had 10.

W & J went on a 9-2 run to open the game.  A three pointer by Perez at the 7:53 mark brought the Devils to within a point, 17-16. The Presidents outscored Fredonia 12-4 to finish out the half and take a 29-20 lead into the locker room.

Midway through the second half, W & J  rallied for a 53-33 lead, its biggest of the game.

From there, the Devils pushed back, going on a 21-7 run to pull within six points, 60-54, with three minutes to play.

Fredonia continued to plug away. With 47 seconds to go, Ice would convert a layup to make it a four-point game,  64-60. W & J would convert on 9 of 10 free-throw attempts down the stretch to hang on for the win.

Primo Zini had 15 points to lead the Presidents.

W & J held a 42-32 edge in rebounds, and was 7 of 23 from three-point range, compared to Fredonia's 3 of 19. They also shot 22 of 24 from the line, while Fredonia was 7 of 10.

The men return to the hardwood on Tuesday vs. Waynesburg. Tip off is slated for 6 p.m., following the women's game.
