Baseball Lets Lead Slip Away In 7-6 Loss To RPI

TROY, N.Y. – Despite having a three-run lead for four innings the Plattsburgh State baseball team suffered a 7-6 loss to RPI Wednesday evening at Robinson Field.

Junior Patrick Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) was 3-for-4 at the plate including one RBI while senior Joe Deland (Farmingville, N.Y. / Sachem East) was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

With one out and bases loaded in the first inning junior Jon Craft (Smithtown, N.Y. / Smithtown West) was hit by a pitch sending freshman Jack Bermingham (Monroe, N.Y. / Monroe-Woodbury) home to score the Cardinals first run.

Deland was also hit by a pitch which scored senior Noah Clark (Toms River, N.J. / Toms River East) and a wild pitch scored Bryant for Plattsbrugh State to lead 3-0.

In the top of the fifth Deland doubled to left center to plate junior Rocco Cipriano (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. / Dobbs Ferry) for a 4-0 lead.

Junior pitcher PJ Weeks (Bayport, N.Y. / Bayport-Blue Point) and the Cardinals defense were able to hold off the Engineers for four inning. A double in the bottom of the fifth scored RPI's first run for a three-run deficit.

RPI's bats came alive in the sixth as they recorded six runs, one was off a passed ball, another off a single to right field and four came from a home run to take a 7-4 advantage.

The Cardinals tried to rally in the ninth.

Clark hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score junior Jordan Godfrey (Castleton, Vt. / Rutland) and P. Bryant singled up the middle to plate sophomore Stephen Bryant (Center Moriches, N.Y. / Center Moriches) to come within one run of the Engineers.

Unfortunately the Cardinals comeback fell short and they took the one run loss.

Week pitched five innings and scattered four hits, one run, walked three and struck out two.

Sophomore Justin Adams (Valhalla, N.Y. / Westlake) pitched .1 innings and gave up one hit, two runs and walked one.

Freshman Chase Blazak (Pelham, N.H. / Bishop Guertin) pitched .2 innings and dispersed two hits, four runs, walked two and struck out one.

Junior Matt Fox (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) pitched 2.1 inning and had one hit, walked two and struck out one.
