Softball Splits With Geneseo To End Season

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The College at Brockport softball team wrapped up their 2018 season with a doubleheader split against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) leader Geneseo. The Golden Eagles finish the season with a 15-19 mark, including a 5-13 record in conference play.

Game 1: Win, 6-5
The offense got rolling right away today, as Brockport tagged the Geneseo starter for five runs in the bottom of the first inning, giving them a commanding lead.

After Alexis Ross and Meghan Cullen led off the game with back-to-back-singles, Casey Danko drew a walk to load the bases. Lindsay Wachna got the scoring started in the next at-bat when she hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman who tried to come home for the force out, but was late on the throw allowing Ross to score.

Karleigh Eaton kept the runs coming when she lined a double over the head of the center fielder to score two more, before Alison Missavage followed her up with another double in the right centerfield gap, putting the Green and Gold up 5-0.

Becky Knorr had a strong showing on her senior day, holding the Knights off the board for the first three innings of play. The Geneseo offense finally got going in the fourth, scoring four runs (one earned) to close the gap all the way to one.

Wachna got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning when she crushed a long single off the wall to score Danko all the way from first, extending the Brockport lead to 6-4

Geneseo threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh when they got to within one after a throwing error, and had a runner on second with nobody out. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third, and brought up Anna Merante with the tying run just 60 feet away.

After seeing one pitch go by, Merante attempted a suicide squeeze, bunting up the first base line while the runner broke for home. Lucky for the Golden Eagles, Wachna had it played perfectly, sprinting toward the plate while fielding the ball and flipping to Karleigh Eaton with her glove in time to tag the runner at home.

Having escaped the threat, Knorr got the final batter to pop up to second, ending the game with a final score of 6-5. Knorr picked up her sixth win of the season, going the distance while allowing just one earned run on eight hits, and striking out four.

Danko, Wachna, and Morgan Flamholtz all recorded two hits apiece, while Ross, Cullen, Eaton, and Missavage all had hits in the game as well.

Game 2: Loss, 10-2
Casey Danko was the bright spot on offense for the Green and Gold in the back half of today's doubleheader, hitting her fourth and fifth homers of the season in the game. The first shot came in the bottom of the first when she times up a fastball that was up in the zone, sending it over the left field fence to put Brockport up 1-0.

Amanda Colon took the loss in the game despite a strong outing, allowing just two runs through her first four innings of work. The senior located her pitches well, forcing 11 Geneseo hitters to ground out during her six innings in the circle.

Danko's second long ball of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning when the sophomore led off the frame with a homerun that gave Brockport a 2-1 lead at the time. This ball got out of the park in a hurry, as the sophomore ripped a line drive that sailed over the left centerfield fence for her fifth of the year.

The Knights took their first lead of the game in the top of the fifth with a three run inning, before blowing the game open in the sixth and seventh.

Danko once again recorded a pair of hits, giving her four on the day to lead the team. Ross and Flamholtz also reached base with hits in the outing.

The Brockport softball season comes to a close today, but the Golden Eagles will return eight starters from this year's team to the 2019 roster, as they look to continue their pursuit of a SUNYAC title.
