Red Dragons Open Season with 15-6 Win vs. Maritime

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Terrence Haggerty (Centerport/Harborfield) and Zak Jones (East Quogue/Westhampton Beach) each scored three goals as the Cortland men's lacrosse team opened the season with a 15-6 win over Maritime College.
 
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Cortland but was moved to Union College in Schenectady due to the weather.
 
Haggerty finished with two assists in addition to his three goals. Dante Yacavone (Homer) ended with two goals and two assists and Connor Leonard (Syracuse/Henninger) added two goals and assist. Troy Morris (Long Beach), Danny Caroussos (Smithtown/Smithtown West), Corey McMahon (Lindenhurst/St. John the Baptist), Sean Barrett (Lynbrook) and Brandon Stiles (Mastic/Eastport-South Manor) each scored once. Sophomore Marc Esposito (West Babylon) made 13 saves.
 
Mike Leake led Martime (2-1) with three goals. Bryan Keegan finished with a goal and three assists. Kyle Bockelman played the first three quarters in goal and recorded seven saves. James Walsh allowed one goal and made three saves in the fourth.
 
Cortland broke a 1-1 tie with goals by McMahon, Jones and Haggerty in the final six minutes of the first quarter to take a 4-1 lead. The Red Dragons extended the lead to 7-1 in the first eight minutes of the second on tallies by Yacavone, Stiles and Morris.
 
Cortland led 9-3 at the half and pushed its lead to 13-3 on four straight goals to open the third, two by Jones. The Red Dragons led 14-5 after three quarters and each team scored once in the fourth.
 
Brian Williams (Holtsville/Sachem East) won 16-of-19 faceoffs and scooped up 13 ground balls for the Red Dragons. Justin Wainwright (Homer) caused three turnovers. Kevin Buser paced Maritime with six ground balls and Joey Manno caused five turnovers.
 
Cortland is scheduled to host St. Lawrence on Wednesday, March 4, at 3:30 p.m.
