Tough Third Quarter Leads to Brockport's Loss Against Oneonta, 7-6

 
 
ONEONTA, N.Y. – The College at Brockport men's lacrosse team got edged out by SUNY Oneonta Saturday, losing by a score of 7-6. The Golden Eagles fall to 5-8 (3-3 SUNYAC) in 2018, where the Red Dragons move to 5-9 (2-4 SUNYAC).
 
The Green and Gold came ready to play in the first quarter as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Jake Recor started the scoring for Brockport four minutes into play as he sniped a shot past the keep on a man-up advantage. The Golden Eagles doubled up with seven minutes remaining in the opening quarter when Nick Daigle smoked his shot into the back of the cage. The Brockport defense locked down the Red Dragons in the first quarter holding them to no shots on frame, causing four turnovers, and collecting eight ground balls to Oneonta's three.
 
The offense kept rolling in the second quarter for the Green and Gold, as Patrick Sheridan extended the lead to 3-0 with a goal 12 second into the action. Sheridan stayed hot for Brockport as he recorded his second goal of the day to set the score at 4-0. The Golden Eagles slipped late when Oneonta tallied a pair of goals to set the halftime score at 4-2.
 
Brockport stumbled in the third quarter as Oneonta scored five goals to take a 7-5 advantage. After the Red Dragons first three goals, Daigle scored his second of the day off an assist from Zach Cook to tie the game at 5-5. Back-to-back late goals from Oneonta left Brockport trailing by two heading into the final quarter.
 
Brockport fought hard in the fourth quarter as they ripped off seven total shots in attempt to reclaim the lead. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 7-6 with 2:39 remaining, when Billy Coppola scored with the assist coming from Joe Chiarmonte. Brockport won the following face off which led to a Liam O'Connor shot that was sent high. The Green and Gold has one final attempt to tie the game up, but David Lehman's shot was saved by the visiting goalie with six seconds remaining, which left Brockport losing the game, 7-6.
 
The Golden Eagles dominated the game beating Oneonta in shots (31-22), shots on goal (18-13), ground balls (23-19), and finished with less turnovers (15-21).
 
Sheridan and Daigle each notched two goals on the afternoon, where Coppola and Recor ended with one apiece, and Brendan Halleran handed out two assists. Steven Gurin led with a team-high four caused turnovers and eight ground balls, followed by Pat Quinlivan who accounted for three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
 
Michael Caternolo ended with game going 8-15 in the face off circle, and Ethan Stiles going a solid 1-1.
 
With the loss, the Brockport men's lacrosse team locks into the third spot in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) standing, and will travel to Plattsburgh State this upcoming Wednesday for the first round of the SUNYAC Playoffs.
