Men's lacrosse falls on the road to Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - A balanced offensive attack and a strong opening half lifted the Vassar College men's lacrosse team to a 13-8 victory over SUNY Oneonta in non-conference action on Saturday at Weinberg Turf Field. The win moves the Brewers to 2-2 on the season, while the Red Dragons are now 1-2 overall.

Vassar opened the game's scoring with four first period goals. Senior attack Michael Mullen (Dresher, PA) got things going at the 10:28 mark, converting a pass from rookie Riley Olds. The Brewers made it a 2-0 advantage at 9:04 as junior attack Spencer Duryee fed the ball to sophomore middie Logan Hyde.

Following an unassisted score from sophomore midfielder Connor Deehan at 3:25, Mullen added his second of the contest with 1:16 to play and give Vassar the solid lead. The Brewers continued to answer in the second period as Deehan converted a Hyde pass at 13:54. Mullen then buried a Deehan feed of his own for his third of the contest at 9:11 and a 6-0 VC lead.

The Red Dragons broke onto the scoreboard at 4:39 as freshman attack David Guest (Niskayuna/Niskayuna) (Niskayuna, NY) grabbed a pass from junior midfielder Ryan MacDevitt (Sayville/Sayville) and fired it in for the man-up score, but Vassar responded just 30 seconds later as Olds converted a Deehan feed for the 7-1 edge at the half.

Oneonta continued to battle as junior midfielder Thomas Fay (Nanuet/Nanuet) narrowed the Brewers lead to 7-2 at 13:10 of the third quarter. Vassar answered as Mullen scored back-to-back tallies, both assisted by Hyde, to build up the home team advantage to seven (9-2) with 6:03 to play.

Fay closed out the third quarter by gaining a goal back for the visitors, and Oneonta continued to roll in the fourth as junior midfielder Andrew Stamatel (Glens Falls/Glens Falls) recorded one on the man-up for a 9-4 score at 13:16.

Mullen notched his sixth goal of the game off a feed from Duryee at 11:51 to give the home team a six goal edge (10-4), but the Red Dragons continued to press in the final frame as McRae scored at 8:12. The Brewers saw senior midfielder Matthew Lowery score the first of his two goals straight off the face-off at 8:05 and Olds added another score at 6:22 to make it a 12-5 margin.

The final 3:27 of the contest saw the Red Dragons find momentum as MacDevitt, McRae and junior attack Chris Higgins (Farmingville/Sachem East) (Farmingville, NY) all scored, but Vassar held on for the five-goal victory.
