CORTLAND, N.Y. -- The SUNY Cortland Red Dragons men's soccer team fought off early lightning delays and rain throughout the match to claim a 3-0 victory over the visiting Saxons from Alfred University on Wednesday night. The win brings the nationally 14th-ranked Red Dragons to 5-1 on the season.
Cortland opened the scoring at the 22:48 mark in the first half as
Cam LaVallee (Schenectady/Schalmont) netted a
Ma'Cain Spragling (Akron, OH/Brush) feed for his first goal of the season. The lead would hold at 1-0 through the first half of play.
In the second half, the Red Dragon offense came alive as
Jake Keller (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham) sent a long crossing shot past the Alfred keeper to extend the lead to 2-0. LaVallee added another score just moments later to put his side up 3-0, where the score would remain for a final.
The Cortland defense provided another strong performance, allowing just two shots en route to its fourth shutout of the season.
Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) did not have to make any saves.
