BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 13/14 Plattsburgh State men's ice hockey team suffered its first State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) loss of the year on Friday evening, falling to The College at Brockport, 5-2, at the Tuttle North Ice Arena.
 
The Cardinals are ranked at No. 13 in the USCHO.com Men's Division III Top-15 Poll and No. 14 in the D3hockey.com Men's Top-15 Poll.
 
Plattsburgh State lost despite holding a 33-30 edge in shots. Both teams were scoreless with the extra attacker, with Brockport going 0-for-5 on the power play and Plattsburgh State going 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
 
The Cardinals fall to 2-2-0 overall (2-1-0 SUNYAC) with the loss and next visit No. 8/8 SUNY Geneseo tomorrow at 7 p.m. The Golden Eagles rise to 4-0-1 overall (2-0-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next host SUNY Potsdam tomorrow at 4 p.m.
 
After a scoreless first period, sophomore defenseman Charles Barber (Queensbury, N.Y./New York Bobcats) scored his first career goal unassisted 50 seconds into the second stanza. Brockport quickly responded, as senior forward Zac Sikich tallied on assists from sophomore forward Doc Gentzler and junior defenseman Connar Bass just 2:04 later. The Golden Eagles seized a 2-1 lead with 1:19 left in the period, as senior forward David Horan scored on a feed from sophomore forward Hunter Laslo.
 
Freshman forward Rich McCartney (Hershey, Pa./Philadelphia Revolution) buried his fourth goal of the season 1:36 into the third period to tie the score at 2-all, as he relied on assists from junior defenseman Ayrton Valente (Woodbridge, Ontario/Mississauga Chargers) and freshman forward Mike Falanga (East Haven, Conn./Islanders Hockey Club). Laslo buried the eventual game-winner less than a minute later on assists from Horan and Gentzler, while Sikich padded the lead with his second marker of the game four minutes after Laslo's score. Senior forward Aidan Verbeke and sophomore forward Connor Hutchins each were credited with assists on the goal. Verbeke put the game on ice with 1:51 left in regulation, scoring an empty-net goal following a pass from freshman defenseman Casey Winn.
 
Freshman goaltender Lawson Fenton (Medina, N.Y./Coquitlam Express) made 25 saves in the loss for the Cardinals, while sophomore goaltender Matt Schneider made 31 stops in the win for the Golden Eagles.
