Fie proves to be Plattsburgh's Foe

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Derek Fie (Corning, N.Y. / Corning) proved to be 'Derek Foe' to Plattsburgh on Saturday. The senior roped walk-off base hits to win both games for Fredonia on Senior Day. In Game 1, he singled home Steve Zaprowski (Williamsville, N.Y. / Will South) with no outs in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 win. In Game 2, the Devils rallied for two runs. A sacrifice fly by Zaprowski tied the game, and Fie plated Joseph Coene (Webster, N.Y. / Webster) with a base hit in the bottom of the seventh as the Devils won, 3-2.

It was Fie's third walk-off winner in SUNYAC play this year.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Nicholas Lawlor (Webster,N.Y. / Webster Schroeder) earned the win in both games. He threw the final inning of the opener vulturing the win, then limited the Cardinals to just one bloop hit in going the distance in Game 2.

In the opener, Zaprowski and Fie each had three hits, and J.T. Angora (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) and Patrick Bigham (Rochester, N.Y. / Greece Olympia) had a pair of hits.

Luke Kuczewski (Orchard Park, N.Y. / Orchard Park) got the start on the mound looking to tie the school-record for wins in a season with seven. The junior righty left the game with a 5-4 lead after five innings, but did not factor in the decision. He is now 6-1 this season.

Nick Ciraolo (Clarence, N.Y. / Clarence) gave up a pair of unearned runs in an inning and a third, and Bailey Gauthier (Camilus, N.Y. / West Genesee) pitched a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.

Lawlor threw a perfect ninth to set the stage for Fie's heroics.

In Game 2, Fie had two of the Devil's five hits. He also had a pair of doubles on the day.

Lawlor's final line was seven innings, one hit, three strikeouts and three walks. He needed just 82 pitches for the game.

The Devils trailed 2-0 entering the bottom of the sixth. Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y. / Tully) drove a run in on a bases-loaded, two-out infield hit.

In the seventh, Nicolas Fiore (Webster, N.Y. / Webster Thomas) got on base with a one-out hit. Coene pinch hit and was hit by a pitch. Kole Brink (Frewsburg, N.Y. / Frewsburg) grounded to third base. In his haste to turn two, the ball was muffed by Jon Craft.

Zaprowski ripped a shot to center, and Eric Matz made a diving catch as Fiore tagged up.

Fie then drove the game winner through the right side.

Fredonia improves to 17-13 on the season.
