Baseball swept by Oneonta

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia dropped both ends of its SUNYAC baseball doubleheader Saturday to Oneonta, 12-3 and 10-2, at Ludwig Field.

Game 1 scoring came late. Down 12-0, the Blue Devils broke through for two runs in the fifth on RBI singles by senior Derek Fie (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) and freshman Matt Heffernan (Mattituck,N.Y./Mattituck). They added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Nicolas Fiore (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas).

Senior right-hander Bailey Gauthier (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) was the losing pitcher. He struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. A pair of freshmen righties, Elijah Zells (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) and Ryan Howard (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Niagara Wheatfield), pitched 1 1/3 innings and 1.0 innings of scoreless relief, respectively.

In Game 2, the Blue Devils were in a 10-0 hole before putting their runs across -- a sacrifice fly in the eighth by junior Jon Morrison (Macedon, N.Y./Palmyra-Macedon) and a run on an Oneonta error in the eighth.

Freshman right-hander Nick Ciraolo (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) took the loss. He and four relievers combined to yield 10 hits and 10 walks, but only two earned runs. Freshman right-hander Ernie Wasnock (Barker, N.Y./Barker) and senior right-hander Ryan Landers (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) pitched one scoreless inning each.

Next up for the Blue Devils (11-10 overall, 2-7 SUNYAC) is a Tuesday road trip to face New Paltz at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse, N.Y.
