Strong pitching leads softball to sweep of Fredonia

Alyssa Bluethgen throws complete game shutout in game 1

The sophomore duo of Alyssa Bluethgen (Commack/Commack) and Julia Calabro (Wantagh/St. John the Baptist) pitched SUNY Oneonta to a doubleheader sweep of Fredonia today.  Bluethgen threw a complete-game, two hit shutout in the opener and Calabro followed with a complete-game, six hitter in the nightcap.  Bluethgen also pitched a scoreless seventh inning in gasme 2 to earn a save.  The two wins for the Red Dragons put them at 3-1 in the SUNYAC while raising its overall record to 9-7.

Game 1 summary (Oneonta 4, Fredonia 0)
Bluethgen cruised through the first five innings retiring the first 15 batters she faced.  In the sixth inning, the first batter of the inning reached on low throw that couldn't be picked out of the dirt, but the batter thought the ball got away and made a slight turn towards second and was alertly tagged out by second baseman Brook Corbett.  The next two batters were retired to keep Bluethgen at the minimum through six.

In the seventh, Fredonia broke up the no-hitter and loaded the bases before Bluethgen regrouped to retire the final two batters via strikeouts.  Bluethgen finished the game with five punch outs.

Fredonia starter Katie Yudon matched Bluethgen through the first four innings before Oneonta finally got on the scoreboard with three runs in the fifth inning chasing Yudon from the game with one out.

Sophomore Jade Meehan (Halcottsville/Roxbury Central) started the inning with a bunt single and then stole second to get herself in scoring position.  Meehan went to third on a ground out by Dana Del Genio (New Hartford/New Hartford) before coming in to score on a double to the fence by Selena Ruiz (Westbury/W.T. Clarke).

Ruiz then moved to third on a single by Lauren Sabatino (Bayville/Locust Valley) and then scored on a double by freshman Caroline Koch (New City/Clarkstown South), which moved Sabatino to third base.  Sabatino scored the final run of the inning on a fielding error by the shortstop.

Oneonta added a single run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Del Genio that knocked in freshman Kristen Collins (Hicksville/Holy Trinity) from second base.

Game 2 summary (Oneonta 5, Fredonia 2)
Calabro threw shutout ball for five innings before being touched for a pair of runs in the sixth.  Calabro faced 25 batters retiring 12 via ground outs in earning her third win of the season.

Ruiz put together a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate in game 2.  Del Genio collected three hits, scored two runs and drove in a pair of runs.  Koch had a pair of hits and drove in two runs.

Oneonta's first run came in the home half of the first inning on a squeeze play that scored Del Genio from third.  Del Genio led off the inning with a single up the middle, went to second on a bunt single, before going to third on a fielder's choice that put Ruiz out at second.

Del Genio had a big two-out single in the fourth to drive in Collins and Corbett.

Fredonia scored its two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double from Katelyn Dennis and an RBI single from Yudon.

In the bottom of the inning, the Red Dragons loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by Meehan, Del Genio and Ruiz.  A walk to Sabatino forced the first run in and a ground out by Koch scored the second run.

Bluethgen walked the first batter she faced in the seventh and then retired the next three to record her save.

Oneonta is scheduled to play Rensselaer on Tuesday at home weather permitting.
