Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer falls at home to Vassar 2-1

The SUNY Oneonta women's soccer team scored an early second half goal, but the visiting Brewers of Vassar tied the score less than 30 seconds later and then added the eventual game-winner in the 76th minute to take a 2-1 victory against the Red Dragons today.  The loss for the Red Dragons kept them winless on the season while the Brewers moved to 3-2-1 overall.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half.  Oneonta (0-5-1) held a 7-4 shot advantage in shots including a couple right on the doorstep, but could get the ball across the line.

Oneonta did a great job of pressuring the Vassar defense from the opening whistle of the second half and it paid off in the 51st minute.  Senior Amanda Roney (Schoharie/Middleburgh) gained possession of the ball at the top of the box and made a pass to junior Jess Downin (Franklin/Franklin Central) who was on the near post.  Downin sent the ball across the goal area where sophomore Christina Kornfeld (Mount Sinai/Miller Place) finished the play by putting the ball in the back of the goal.

Unfortunately, the lead for the Red Dragons didn't last long as the Brewers took the free kick and found themselves in the box.  Emily Long made a pass to Ally Thayer who got a shot off that just cleared the outstretched arms of freshman keeper Alexis Ryder (Rotterdam/Schalmont), who was making her first collegiate start today.

Vassar's second goal came after Amanda McFarland gained control of the ball outside the box on the left flank.  She sent a ball across that Ashley Ferry came in possession of after battling a defender before taking a dribble and taking a shot that deflected off another defender and Ryder's hands into the back of the goal.

Oneonta finished the game with a 15-10 shot advantage.  Ryder made seven saves as did Fiona Walsh for Vassar.

Oneonta next match is next Friday, Sep. 22 when they face rival SUNY Cortland in its SUNYAC opener at home beginning at 3pm.
