Middlebury Moves Past Plattsburgh State 60-33

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.­– The Plattsburgh State women's basketball team suffered a 60-33 defeat from Middlebury College Tuesday evening inside Pepin Gymnasium.

Plattsburgh State drops to 1-5 overall while Middlebury continues to be undefeated with a 7-0 record.  

Junior guard Anna Thompson (Poughkeepsie, N.Y. / Spackenkill) started the game with two free throws and the Panthers tied the game quickly. Thompson took the lead back with a layup but Middlebury was able to tie the game again.

Sophomore forward Taylor Clare (Peekskill, N.Y. / Peekskill) put in a layup to take a 6-4 advantage and the Panthers countered with two layups to take a two point cushion.

Sophomore guard Brooke Benna (Oakland, N.J./Indian Hills) hit a jump shot with two minutes left in the first quarter to tie the game 8-8 which remained the score heading into the second quarter.

Freshman guard Hannah Whitney (Keene, N.Y. / Keene Central) started the second off with a three-pointer to give the Cardinals the lead.

Middlebury put in two baskets to take a one point advantage but sophomore forward Frannie Merkel (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) took it back with a layup.

The Panther put in a jump shot and two layups before Merkel was able to make a free throw and then they went on a six point run to lead by ten. Thompson made a three-pointer to cut the lead to seven but the Panthers made a layup and a three-pointer to head into halftime up 29-17.

Middlebury notched 19 points in the third quarter, compared to Plattsburgh State's five, to lead 48-22.

The Cardinals recoded their highest scoring quarter in the fourth with 11 points but the damage was done and Middlebury took a 27 point win.

Middlebury out-rebounded Plattsburgh State 49-36 but the Cardinals recorded 64.3% in free throws compared to the Panthers 50%.

Thompson led the Cardinals with seven points and Clare picked up a team high of seven rebounds and five blocks.

Plattsburgh State is away Friday, Dec. 8, for a SUNYAC game against The College at Brockport with  a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
