Lakers Split With Geneseo, Walk Off in Game One

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team split with conference-leading Geneseo at home on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. Oswego won game one, 2-1, in dramatic walk-off fashion, but fell 5-3 in game two. With the split, Oswego moves to 13-11 on the season and an even 6-6 in SUNYAC play, while Geneseo improves to 19-5 overall and 8-2 in conference action.

In game one, starting pitcher Rebecca Vilchez threw a gem. Vilchez held Geneseo scoreless through the first six innings before allowing just one run in the seventh. The sophomore only gave up three hits and one walk in the 6.1 innings she pitched, striking out four Knight batters along the way.

Angela Frampton closed out the game on the mound, recording a strikeout and groundout from the two Knights she faced.

Offensively, the Lakers broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Madelana Wrubel led off the inning with a single, moved into scoring position on a single by Frampton and later came around to score when Sarah McCullough sent a single up the middle.

Wrubel was the hero for Oswego, coming through with the winning hit in the seventh inning. Jessica McCarthy, pinch running for Taylor DuBois, reached third on a pair of groundouts. Wrubel then smacked a single through the left side to clinch the victory for Oswego.

In game two, with Geneseo leading 3-0 in the third inning, Oswego started to make a comeback. Wrubel continued her big day as she notched another single, scoring Vilchez. The next batter, Frampton, crushed a home run to center to make it a tie game.

In the fourth though, defensive miscues allowed Geneseo to put two runs on the board. Vilchez made quick work of the Knight lineup for the rest of the game, but Oswego's bats were unable to overcome Geneseo's lead.

Frampton started game two on the mound for Oswego, allowing four earned runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Vilchez pitched the remaining 3.2 innings, giving up just one hit to the Geneseo batters she faced.

Oswego returns to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. as it hosts Brockport for a SUNYAC doubleheader.
