Men’s Soccer upsets No. 6 Cortland, 1-0

BUFFALO, N.Y.— Sofiane Hamadi (Marseille, France/Jean Perrin) scored in the 47th minute as Buffalo State upset No. 6 ranked Cortland, 1-0, in a SUNYAC game this afternoon at Coyer Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cortland had possession for much of the first half, but Buffalo State's defense held strong, limiting the Red Dragons' opportunities.  The Bengals answered with a couple of quality chances of their own, but the game scoreless at halftime.
  • Buffalo State broke through for the game's goal when Hamadi took a pass in traffic from Luke Pavone (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) and ripped a shot from 18 yards out for his third goal of the season.
  • Cortland had a chance to even the score with a free kick with three minutes remaining, but goalkeeper Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) punched it out of harm's way to preserve the upset.
  • Queen recorded three saves to earn his sixth shutout of the season.
  • Cortland held a narrow 11-10 edge in shot attempts, but the Bengals had a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.

  • Connor Young recorded six saves in the net for the Red Dragons.
 
NOTEWORTHY
  • Buffalo State snapped Cortland's 15-game conference winning streak dating back to last season that included a victory in the SUNYAC Championship game.
  • Buffalo State reached the 10-win plateau in three-consecutive seasons for the first time in school history.
