CORTLAND, N.Y. – Eight different players scored goals as the nationally 15th-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team pulled away in the second half to earn a 14-9 victory versus Oneonta in SUNYAC action Saturday afternoon. The host Red Dragons improved to 7-4 overall and 2-0 in the conference with the win. The visiting Red Dragons dropped to 4-6 and 1-1 in the SUNYAC.
 
Senior Liam Erickson and juniors Joey Panariello and Terrence Haggerty paced Cortland with three goals each. Graduate student Devin Phelps tallied a game-high seven points on one goal and a career-best six assists. Junior Mike McNaney totaled one goal and three assists. Senior Thomas McNaney and junior Dean Riley each recorded one goal and one assist, and senior Michael O'Connor netted his first goal of the season.
 
Senior goalie Joe Scalise turned aside six shots and collected three ground balls for the host Red Dragons. Sophomore Gage Gomez won 9-of-13 faceoffs and scooped up three ground balls, while sophomore Brian Williams won 7-of-12 faceoffs and secured three ground balls. Senior Trevor Pratt contributed an assist, five ground balls and three caused turnovers.
 
Junior Stephen Panno (Holtsville/Sachem East) led Oneonta with three goals and one assist, and junior Thomas Moore (Rockville Centre/South Side/Rockville Centre ) scored three goals as well. Senior Hunter DeLuca (Medford/Patchogue Medford) tallied two goals and one assist, junior Jimmy Kickel (South Setauket/Ward Melville) had a goal and two assists and three others each chipped in with one assist.
 
Sophomore goalie Zachary Flynn (Stony Brook/Ward Melville) made 16 saves. Senior Troy Stasko (Smithtown/Comsewogue) won eight faceoffs and collected four ground balls. Seniors John Grauwiler (East Setauket/Ward Melville) and John Shea (Huntington/Huntington) each secured four ground balls, and junior Shane Carroll (Poughkeepsie/Arlington) caused three turnovers.
 
Cortland led 2-0 after the first quarter on Haggerty's man-up goal at 11:43 and Panariello's goal at 1:38. Erickson gave the host Red Dragons a 3-0 lead at 11:54 of the second quarter before goals from Moore and Panno 39 seconds apart pulled Oneonta to within 3-2. Haggerty scored again on an extra-man opportunity, but Panno netted back-to-back goals to make it a 4-4 game at the 4:43 mark. Panariello and DeLuca traded goals and the teams went into the half tied at 5-5.
 
Riley and Moore each scored to open the third quarter, and the teams were tied at 6-6 with 9:29 to play. Cortland closed the third quarter with four straight goals from four different players and took a 10-6 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play. Oneonta netted three of the first four goals of the fourth quarter to trim Cortland's lead to 11-9 with 8:56 remaining. The host team sealed the win with three goals in the final 3:45 to grab the 14-9 victory.
