OSWEGO, N.Y.— The College at Brockport men's soccer team used a game-winning overtime goal to knock off State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Oswego State, 1-0.
Brockport moves to 8-3-3 on the year and 3-1-2 in SUNYAC play. The Lakers now sport a 6-7-1 record and are 1-6 in conference.
The Green and Gold fired off six shots in the first half with
Quintin Volpe leading the team with three. Sophomore goalkeeper
Joseph Romano helped keep a shut out through the first half by making three saves on five shots faced. Through 45 minutes of play, neither team cracked the scoreboard and the game would go into the break at a 0-0 draw.
Brockport shot an additional eight times in the second half but were unable to net a goal to take the lead. Defensively, the Golden Eagles kept Oswego off the board with splendid play from their veteran defense. Neither team was capable of scoring in regulation and the match headed into overtime.
"Another outstanding defensive effort, especially playing against the wind in the first half and in overtime," commented head coach
Gary LaPietra.
The game saw its first goal of the day with
Chris Aherne knocking in the game winner in the 107th minute after a cross in the box was deflected by
Stephen Latino. The goal brings Aherne's total to six on the year.
"Aherne keeps finding ways to win games for us and was in the right place again," stated LaPietra. "We really needed the three points as we are fighting hard to secure a playoff spot in our conference."
The Green and Gold play their final away game of the regular season as they travel to SUNY Cortland on Saturday Oct. 14 for a 1 p.m. matchup.
