Gangewere Stands Strong For SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey in Loss to No. 16 University of Rochester

| By:
Box Score Rochester, NY -- Senior Megan Gangewere set a new career high with 26 saves in a tough 3-2 overtime loss against No. 16 University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon. Gangewere's 26 stops are the fourth most in a single game in program history.

The Hawks drop to 2-4 while the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-1. This is the fourth time in five years SUNY New Paltz has lost to Rochester by one goal.

"Rochester put a lot of pressure on our defense, but they held strong and denied Rochester multiple scoring opportunities throughout the entire contest," head coach Shanna Szablinski said. "Megan Gangewere was outstanding and made key plays that kept us in the game. Unfortunately, we struggled to generate much offensively. Rochester played us tight in the midfield, denying us opportunities to get inside our circle."Megan Gangwere GIF

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game with a goal from junior Nancy Bansbach off an assist from sophomore Colleen Maillie.

The scored remained 1-0 through the beginning of the second half until sophomore Kaitlyn Gunter found the back of the cage in the 44th minute. Junior Samantha Ackerman gave SUNY New Paltz the lead with her third goal of the season at the 51:27 mark, off an assist from senior Justine O'Reilly. Yellow Jackets senior goalkeeper Kiran Sundaram allowed just one goal all season prior to the game.

Rochester tied the game at two in the 62nd minute when Maillie scored her third goal of the season.

Just more than one minute into overtime, senior Claire Dickerson lifted a shot that just got past Gangewere to give Rochester the 3-2 win. The loss marks the Hawks' second overtime defeat this season.

The Yellow Jackets out-shot SUNY New Paltz 43-6 and held a 18-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Ackerman notched two defensive saves in regulation to keep the game close and force overtime. Gunter tallied a team-high three shots on the day.

"We played really hard and aren't complacent with just competing with these nationally ranked teams," Gangewere said. "We're excited to take this momentum into SUNYAC play next weekend and focusing on training even harder this week."

The Hawks will next come home to host SUNYAC foe The College at Brockport on Friday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. on the North Turf Field.
