ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women's volleyball team fell, 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19), to Oswego State in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action on Friday afternoon at SUNY Oneonta's Dewar Arena.
While Plattsburgh State matched Oswego in service aces (10-10) and trailed the Lakers by just one block (9-8), Oswego hit at a .181 clip compared to Plattsburgh State's .077 hitting percentage.
Plattsburgh State drops to 6-17 overall (0-7 SUNYAC) with the result and finishes out SUNYAC play tomorrow against host Oneonta (12 p.m.) and Fredonia (2:30 p.m.). Oswego rises to 11-13 overall (4-3 SUNYAC) with the win and wraps up the weekend tomorrow with matches against SUNY New Paltz (12 p.m.) and SUNY Geneseo (5 p.m.).
Oswego hopped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set, and after the two teams traded points, Plattsburgh State won eight straight rallies and seized a 17-16 lead following a service ace by senior right side
Lexi Pascal (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley). The Lakers put the set out of reach with six unanswered points and took the first by a 25-20 score.
The Cardinals took an early 3-2 lead in the second before Oswego countered with a 5-0 run to seize a 7-3 advantage. Plattsburgh State battled back and tied the score twice at 12-all and 15-all, but six straight Laker points put Oswego in front for good. The Lakers took the set by a 25-17 final.
Neither team was able to create much separation from the other in the third, and the Cardinals relied on strong blocking to take a late lead. After a Cardinal service error gave Oswego a 23-22 cushion, sophomore right side/setter

Tatyana Barlow (Palmdale, Calif./Pete Knight) posted back-to-back block assists to hand Plattsburgh State the lead. Freshman outside hitter
Rachel Mennonna (Selden, N.Y./Newfield) floored an ace on the ensuing serve to hand the Cardinals a 25-23 victory in the third.
Plattsburgh State came all the way back from an 8-1 deficit in the fourth, taking a 16-15 advantage following a Laker attacking error. The two teams traded points before Oswego put the match on ice with six straight points to win the fourth, 25-19.
Sophomore outside hitter/right side
Hunter Grotjohn (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) led the Cardinals with 12 kills and 14 digs for a double-double, while Coon dished out 25 assists. Freshman middle hitter/right side
Michelle Simmons (Riverside, Calif./Riverside Poly) excelled at the service line with four aces and also reinforced the front row with four total blocks (one solo, three assist). Sophomore libero
Bryanne Yasui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Moanalua) defended a team-high 15 digs.
For Oswego, junior middle hitter Alison Sullivan paced the attack with 10 kills, while sophomore setter Julia Flohr distributed 22 assists. Senior libero Rina Qelaj registered a match-high 19 digs.
