Volleyball falls on two day to Fredonia and Oneonta

OSWEGO, N.Y.- The SUNY Potsdam volleyball (9-11, 1-5 SUNYAC) competed in day two of the SUNYAC Pool Play at Oswego State. The Bears fell to SUNY Fredonia (12-7, 4-1 SUNYAC) 3-1 and SUNY Oneonta (9-14, 3-3 SUNYAC) 3-2.
 
The teams split the first two sets with the Blue Devils taking set one 25-17 and the Bears holding on in set two, 25-21. Fredonia swept the next two sets, 25-21 and 25-20, to take the match. Freshman outside hitter Anika Anderson (Honolulu, Hawaii/Radford) led Potsdam with 10 kills, nine digs and four aces and fellow freshman middle hitter Nicole Hansen (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) had eight kills. Senior captains Kelsea Healis (Rohnert Park, Calif./Rancho Cotate) and Rachel Topf (Eagle River, Alaska/Chugiak) and junior defensive specialist Maddie Kaplan (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Peru) each had 13 digs with Topf pitching in four assists and four kills.  Freshman middle hitter Monica Mack (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and senior defensive specialist Whitney Coyle (Middletown, N.Y./Minisink Valley) each had three aces, while junior captain Brianna Rodda (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) tallied 23 assists, one ace and six digs.
 
Oenonta held off Potsdam in set one, 28-26, but the Bears took the next two sets, 25-18 and 25-23. Before falling in the final sets, 25-18 and 15-11. Anderson came through again in game two with 18 digs, 10 kills and three aces and Mack tacked on 10 kills, three blocks and two digs. Rodda finished with 36 assists and 10 digs, while Coyle had nine digs. Healis had nine kills, three blocks and nine digs and freshman opposite Cierra Farnschlader (Palm Bay, Fla./Palm Bay Magnet) added four blocks and four kills.
 
Potsdam will be back next weekend when the Bears compete in the Canton Tri-Match Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, Potsdam will battle University of Maine at Fort Kent at 12:30 p.m. Followed by Elmira at 11 a.n. and Canton at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
