FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The SUNY Fredonia baseball team fell to Plattsburgh, 5-4, after surrendering a run in the ninth and a run in the 12th on Friday.
Plattsburgh opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.Â
In the fourth inning,
Joshua Crocetti (Hilton, N.Y. / Hilton) singled to left to plate
Derek Fie, who walked, and
Daniel Goodbread (Tully, N.Y. / Tully) who reached on a base hit.
The sixth inning saw Plattsburgh regain the lead with a pair of runs to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh,
Steve Zaprowski (Williamsville, N.Y. / Williamsville South) singled past a drawn-in infield as the Devils regained the lead. Zaprowski advanced to second on a bunt by Fie.
J.T. Angora (Rochester, N.Y. / Rush Henrietta) singled to right to easily plate Zaprowski. However, the home plate umpire rules that Zaprowski missed third and nullified the score.
Plattsburgh threatened in the eighth. After a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt and another walk, the Cardinals had runners at first and second.
Bailey Gauthier (Camilus, N.Y. / West Genesee) punched out the next two batters to end the threat.
Plattsburgh's Kentaro Mori was hit by a pitch to start the ninth. A wild pitch advanced him to second. A bunt single put runners at the corners. Zaprowski entered the game from right field. He yielded only a sacrifice fly and would end the inning with the game tied at four.
The Devils managed a runner at second with one out in the bottom of the inning, but could not muster a run.
In the top of the 12th, Plattsburgh's Jon Craft doubled in the go-ahead run.
With two outs, the Devils got base hits from Angora and Goodbread to threaten. A fly to left would end the game.
Zaprowski took the loss, allowing one run in four innings. Starting pitcher
Ryan Landers (Fairport, N.Y. / Fairport) went 7 1/3 innings allowing three runs, striking out five, and allowing five hits.
Fredonia falls to 15-13 and was eliminated from the SUNYAC Tournament.
