Cortland Overcomes Early Deficit to Defeat Morrisville, 5-1, in NCAA First Round

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored five straight goals, including sophomore Michael Miner's (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) first two collegiate scores, to erase an early 1-0 deficit and the nationally sixth-ranked Red Dragons defeated visiting Morrisville State, 5-1, in the opening round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament.

Cortland will face Scranton in the second round Sunday at 5 p.m. at the Stadium Complex. Scranton defeated Penn St. Behrend, 2-1, in Saturday's other first-round game at Cortland.

Cortland (18-2) won its 13th straight game to extended its single-season school win streak record. The Red Dragons are two shy of the overall school winning streak record of 15 games set between the 1959 (last six) and 1960 (first nine) seasons.

Morrisville (16-4) took a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a Jamieson McKoy goal. Griffen MacWatters sent a lead pass that sprung McKoy on a breakaway, and McKoy beat Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) on a shot that Young got a piece of but wasn't able to stop.

Miner tied the game in the 30th minute, off a Nick Tata (Rochester/Aquinas Institute) assist, when his shot from a sharp angle on the left side went off the extended hands of Morrisville goalkeeper Eric Berglund and into the net. The Red Dragons took a the lead with 44 seconds left in the half on an "own goal" when a Morrisville defender kicked the ball in while trying to clear away a Cortland cross from the left side.

The Red Dragons quickly extended the lead to 3-1 less than two minutes into the second half on Miner's second goal, with Tata once again assisting. Tata took a shot that was stopped by Berglund, but a hustling Miner raced past the Mustangs' defense and knocked home the rebound into an open goal.

Morrisville received a red card in the 59th minute to go down a player, and Cortland capitalized when Daniel Friend (Deer Park) scored his sixth goal of the season on a 12-yard shot inside the right post. Morrsville lost another player to a red card in the 67th minute, and Kevin Carpenter (Kings Park) finished the scoring in the 83rd minute with a shot that caromed off Berglund's hands and went inside the left post. Chris Hettler (Hauppauge/Smithtown West) assisted on the goal.

Young finished with two saves for Cortland and Berglund recorded seven saves for Morrisville. Cortland outshot the Mustangs, 26-9, and each team earned four corner kicks.
