Softball drops twin bill against New Paltz in season finale

BUFFALO, N.Y.— New Paltz used a three-run fourth inning to escape with a 4-1 victory in the early game, before completing the sweep over host Buffalo State with a 12-5 win in today's season finale.
 
GAME #1 BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hannah Dunlap (Batavia/Oakfield-Alabama) had an RBI double in the first inning to account for Buffalo State's only run of the opening game.
  • Julia Blujus (Amherst/Sacred Heart) was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
  • Cassie O'Hern (Augusta, NJ/High Point) was also 2 for 3 with a double.
  • After the Bengals took the early lead, New Paltz responded with a three-run fourth inning on three hits, including a two-run home run.
  • The Hawks added an insurance run on a three-hit inning in the seventh and closed Buffalo State out in the bottom of the frame.
  • Oriana Castello (Pearl River/Nanuet) was charged with the loss, allowing five hits and was charged with two runs against in 3 2/3 innings.
  • Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield) came on in relief and pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sydney McIntosh (Buffalo/Kenmore West) paced the Bengals in the second game, going 2 for 4 with a leadoff home run in top of the sixth and a pair of run scored.
  • O'Hern was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Justine Silva (Baldwin Park, CA/Arroyo) went 1 for 3 with two RBIs.
  • Taylor Benton (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield), Lauren Jolly (Waterloo/Waterloo) and Dunlap also recorded hits for the Bengals.
  • New Paltz opened the scoring with four-run top of the second and added two more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 6-0 lead.
  • Buffalo State responded with a two-out, two-RBI double by O'Hern to trim the deficit to 6-2 after four innings.
  • The Hawks tacked on a solo run on two hits in the next half inning, before extending its lead to 11-2 on a four-run top of the sixth inning.
  • McIntosh lead off the bottom of the frame with her fourth home run of the season as Buffalo State cut the deficit to 11-5 with a three-run inning.
  • The Hawks scored a late insurance run in the top of the seventh to complete the scoring.
  • Emma Richard (Grand Island/Grand Island) was credited with the loss on the mound, giving up five earned runs in 3 1/3 innings of work.
  • Hayes and Dani Priester (Greenfield/Saratoga) combined to give up six runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief.
