CORTLAND, N.Y. - The Cortland women's tennis team opened its 2018 dual season with a 7-2 non-league win over visiting Misericordia University in sweltering conditions at the Cortland Varsity Tennis Courts.

The Red Dragons grabbed a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Mia Hayes (Binghamton/Chenango Forks) and Chloe Knapp (Jamestown) won 8-2 at first doubles and Tina Wertman (Rochester/Caledonia-Mumford) and Cassie Special (Williamsville/Williamsville South) earned an 8-6 win at third doubles. Misericordia's Erika Slowicki and Kayla Rembish won 8-2 at second doubles.

Cortland extended its lead to 4-1 with quick victories by Knapp and Hayes at second and first singles, respectively. Knapp led 5-2 in the first set before her opponent retired, while Hayes won 6-2, 6-1. Wertman clinched the team victory with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph at fourth singles.

Cassidy Breen notched the Cougars' lone singles win with a 6-4, 6-2 decision at fifth singles. The final two matches were both won by Cortland in super tiebreakers to 10 points after the competitors split the first two sets. Isabella Arrigo (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) lost her first set at third singles to Slowicki, 6-2, but came back to win the second set, 6-3, and the super tiebreaker, 10-7. At sixth singles, Olivia Terry (Hampton Bays) won the first set versus Nicole Joers, 6-2, but Joers won 7-5 in the second. Terry captured the super tiebreaker, 10-3, to complete the competition that was played in low-90 degree weather.

Cortland will host Division II Le Moyne College on Friday at 4 p.m.
